They can grind that crank no problem.

I think Jeff and Bo have pics and some vid as well. Jeff did a great job prepping. We only had trouble with one of the crankshaft bolts. Had to cut it with a grinder.

How do you like them apples? Never saw HG lift or twist the first wrench! WUWT? WTF? He is Moe, what did you expect? He did take over the hand grinder and cut the nut of the highly sought after and quite rare special stud on the flywheel. He cut the stud, too. Oh, Lee.... Jeff isn't allowed to play with power tools, that's why HG got down and dirty. Oh, and he was the clean up guy...he went around behind us and swiped up all the F bolts to take home to clean...and sell.

I'm reading about 20% factual, and 80% BS. No comments on what really was found. Might as well go watch a 3 stooges movie now. Oilly

Is Jeff missing any brass? He did find one brass nut. Schillers eyes lit up. In all seriousness, Jeff is still disassembling. He'll post some pictures later. Before we left, we pulled number 1 piston. The engine spun so much easier. The top ring was stuck in the groove. Not much else was noticed. Jeff showed a picture of the gear at the end of the crank shaft. It was missing one tooth and had a few more chipped. The fiber gear looked intact. The only other odd thing discovered was the bushing in the flywheel...it fell out of place when we removed the fly. It also had a somewhat deep groove maybe 1/8" (possibly thinner) wide around it. As of now, best guess for metal shards in Pistons are those chipped teeth. Oh, he did see some remnants of antifreeze and oil around the base of two of the Pistons...can't remember which two. Maybe 3 and 4? I think next he has the valves and cam to go.

I took all of the bell housing bolts off, unbolted the drivers side motor mount. Broke all of the crankshaft bolts free. Jeffs hand is busticated from his transfer case experience. I was right up in there... Really awesome to hang out with Bo and Jeff. And Jeffs brother ... Got to meet him too.

More like you smoked cigarettes and played in the rain until that lightening bolt made you leak oil in your tighty whiteys, Schiller.
So what would've caused the engine to bind...the metal shards in the Pistons?

So what would've caused the engine to bind...the metal shards in the Pistons? I actually believe that the teeth on that Crankshaft jumped, causing a serious timing issue. I think the Pistons and valves offset where causing the bind. When we removed #1 piston , it spun nice. How that got whacked? Anybody's guess. We all stand to learn something here. I have to again give props to Jeffers prepping and having a clean work area. He has been texting Bo and I all night long!!!! I admire his dedication and willingness to dive in!!! He is short a few F bolts ... Just saying.... That Bo Bo Turocy!!!!

So what would've caused the engine to bind...the metal shards in the Pistons? It's Saturday... bath day in the South! I'm just confused on the metal shavings the pistons.... The only thing I could think is that a broken ring cocked and started shaving metal, but I don't know....

The boys left me to do disassembly, strangest thing is none of the piston rings look disfigured in any way, least not to have produced shavings that appeared in the cylinders. Truth, it kinda pissed me off that the crank spun so freely with #1 out, but there wasn't anything outward wrong with the cylinder. I had half a mind to put it all back together! Damn jeep. I'll take more pics and post em later- I got to removing the camshaft and ran out of steam. I'm sure I'll have errands to do today, but I will get back to it. Thanks again to Bo and Scott for their invaluable help.

The picture I'm getting from descriptions is a valve was stuck on # 1? Possibly caused the engine to stop and break a timing gear tooth? Does this engine have timing gears or timing chain and sprockets. I think Moosey said the head was WW 2 and the block is civiy. Most likely gears then and one is fiber. To get metal on top of the piston, and not broken piston and rings, then it came in through the intake and valves. Possible trash entering from another project? Top of piston all banged up? Jeff # 1, if you are going to spend money on a rebuild, why not find a WW2 block and build it? Costs the same to build onee correct for your Jeep other than buying the block. Oilly

That's an interesting thought Oilly...the valves spraying the shrapnel across the Pistons.
HG and Jeffers should switch blocks. Haines has the WW2 and Jeff has the CJ.

Oilly, great point. Took me ages to find the info I needed to remove the gear.. In the tm9-803. In other words I wasted a shitepile of time. Yes, fibre gear, and still on. Still pressing on best as I can muddle.

Uneducated guess here, but I think this is a mix of valve types.. This is not work for an all-thumbs guy like me...

Jeff, 1. put the cover back on the oil pump, it can be pulled as a unit with the cover on. 2. are the last 2 valves stuck open and where are the adjusting screws?

Ummmm have you removed your cam? Why am I seeing no tapper adjuster nuts on the springs to the right? There are two valves per cylinder, one intake one exhaust.

Jeff is magical! I might go back to his garage to watch more of this show. My house is currently insane on this rainy day. You sent me a text earlier about an odd oil pump...now it makes sense! X2 what Rick said. It should pull out as a unit. It is kind of shaped like the distributor...it has a long shaft with a little gear on it at the end.
Did you remove your cam shaft? Surely that won't come out if springs are still in place, right?
