The best part about your problem is you stayed the course. You didn't give up and my hats off to you! Every time this happens, I want to know what it was as bad as you. It then gets checked away in the school of hard knocks (no pun) for future reference. It will happen again and now we add to the list of possibles------That frigging little screw that went missing. Check! now from what I saw, I think if your piston isn't damaged, and valve is unmarked in the seat, and doesn't wobble as it turns, put it together! Oil

Look at the bright side, it's better for it happen at, and to have found it at home than on top of Mt. Princeton...... Amen Brother Amen ....

Your tenacity is to be commended. Glad you found the culprit and will continue on to the journey you were meant to enjoy.

To Bruce...you were consistently pointing me to the top. Could you hear my knock all the way up there in Northern Colorado? Leaker guessed that I might check my newly installed throttle plate screw. Funny how great minds think alike. I'm so giddy this morning. I have a ton of reassembly to do, but I'm almost excited to get back out and get rolling on it. I'm going to look at the bright side...this disassembly has given me a chance to clean up some dirt and mud that has been hiding since the FCT 2013. Last year, Rachel talked me into going full bore through some pretty deep mud puddles. My green Willys was quickly transformed into a brown Willys. The windshield was down too. We were both blasted from head to toe in muddy water. It took a couple showers to get all the mud out of my ears. Tim

Do you mean I'm going to get my Jeep dirty at the Tour? ? Oh No! That's what water and soap is for. Don't forget to wash behind the bumpers! Oil

Tim, If I were you, I would build up a fresh 134 for Odi, Not that I am a purist but there is great value in your GPW engine to the GPW crowd. You may be able to get a fresh engine for little money and help out a fellow jeeper with a correct engine for a GPW. Food for future thought, LOL. And good luck with the re-assembly . Lee

Lee, I have discussed this with Tim. I brought it up as soon as I saw what he had. If I remember right, he said that it's fine right where it is, there's no need to make any changes. BW

First and foremost, The top is back on. Test start...NO KNOCK. Damn screw! I did pull the Carter just before the test start...just to make sure the throttle and choke screws were good and tight! I still need to put the new fuel pump back on, new gaskets for the timing cover and oil pan, then re-adjust the valves back to .16 . I got the replacement spring for my starter. Turns out I broke the inner portion of the Bendix too. I'll be needing a full set up. Time to call Walcks. Lee, I've been tempted to part with this engine. You're one of many folks that have suggested a swap would do me and a GPW owner some good. From my perspective, it's a known commodity. This little screw event is the first and only time this little L-head has caused me trouble. In this case, I can't even blame the engine. It didn't fail. In fact, it did everything it could to avoid damage to itself. Aside from my fondness, it's also a fun conversation piece. I have a 3A...Dressed like an M38...Powered by a GPW. How much fun is that? For the purist, I have a basket case, but I also have a unique Willys! I like unique. If I ever get persuaded to part with it, Bruce would probably get first dibs. Of course, I would have to put on my 'Jerry Mcguire' cap and start screaming..."Show Me The Money!!" Well, back at it. I'll check in a little later tonight...you know...to see what the bid is up to on my GPW. Tim

I feel more gooder now. You do excellent work. Even listen to Foghat. I'll have a cold one for you in 2 weeks to celebrate! Then we can all sign Haine's hat, and then pick a nice smelling twig of fir or spruce so he can close his eyes and believe he is in Colorado. What are friends for anyway! Ha! Oil

I had a feeling the Rocky Mountain Oysters conversation would come back up. I personally haven't had them since I was a kid. Not my favorite. They taste a lot like liver. Got my gasket set last night. I was able to set the timing cover and oil pan. I also dialed back the valves to .14 . They seemed a little noisy at .16 . Just need to stick the fender back on, add some oil, then I'll be back to where I was two freakin' weeks ago. For the FCT, I still need to replace the shoes on 3 wheels and gather my parts kit. My garage is an absolute disaster right now. I can't believe I let it get this bad!! Tools and paper towels strewn everywhere. It's kind of embarrassing, frankly. Tim

Tim, you tear a complete Jeep project down to the frame and it's a mess. I live in a mess. Now try two at once, with maintenance on the other 6 and there you have it-------a fricken mess. Ha!

Thinking along the topic of a mess, one mans junk is another's treasure. I'll bet both Lee and Haines have treasure all over!-------------or junk and a fricken mess. Now comment or forever hold your tongues! Oil
