Sir Hawk, Watched the video multiple times. I hear the knock .
I don't think you have a rod or bearing issue. . My understanding is with those type problems, noise gets louder with higher RPM .
I made some phone calls to my colleges , some answered some did not ...It is a Holliday .
In talking with one who answered. .. I remembered that your engine is a GPW ! Chain drive!! It was discussed about perhaps timing jumped.
Now I reach.. Check your timing, and listen to the timing cover area .
Odd about the fuel pump .
Keep talking ... It helps !!!

Sounds to me like one of your valve clearances is too much. If you set them up for the magic nine method, grab each one that is to be set with your hand see if one has too much clearance. If the tappet has a round crater worn into it, the feeler gauge will ride on top at the craters edge and give a false clearance reading. Your hand raising it will tell you which one. If that doesn't find it, run it and pull one plug wire at a time and see if the noise goes away. If it does, you found a loose wrist pin or bad rod bearing. That noise to me is a loose valve clearance. It seemed to also get noisy or increased as you moved your camera near the side chest. Take a good look at the spring coil spacing. If one is broken, you'll see the coil spacing difference. I really want you to fix this and come to Mike's so I can meet you. John

Haines, if his timing jumped a tooth, it most likely would not start. I have heard of the camshaft moving front to back in a go devil making a tapping noise! The shim behind the gear was worn. If it's chain drive, the cover has a pin rivited to it that holds the cam into the bore. My money is still in the side chest. Oilly

Fantastic advice! General, what are your thoughts on my timing idea?

More: I've lost rod bearings and it was fairly quiet until you began to rev the engine. The knock is pronounced upon acclerating. Quiet when you let off. Your noise is steady as heck. I've also had a knock in my 327 chevy that was similar. The sound was all over and I thought it was a main bearing. I used the stethascope and when I put it on the fuel pump body, it about broke my eardrum. The stupid spring was weak and let the drive rod from the cam to the pump do the knocking. New pump, no sound. You changed to the pump that was quiet before? Just trying to help here. John

And you are!! Immensely ! That's my point..
I am by far an engine expert! It bothers me when one of my Bros has any sort of problem.
We are a team...
Let's figure it out . Can't have Sir Tim jeep less for the FCT.
The world as I know it would end !!

Haines, if Mike has any hats left, I'm getting one and sending it to you. I'll tear off some alpine fir and put it in the hat. Then you can close your eyes, smell and wallah your at 9000 feet in Colorado. A cool refreshing moment for you. Oil

Tim said, "So what do you think?" Well, I don't think it's the fuel pump. Kidding aside, I know you've already established that. How about something on top of a piston? Like Rudy said, it's fast, like every revolution, not every other one, like on a power stroke or anything valve related. If you short out or disconnect plug wires, one at a time, does anything change? You've had all the bearings out and they're OK, I guess it's time to pull the head and have a look. There's still time, Tim. We can build you another engine if we have to. Let me know if there's anything I can do. I've got lots of spare parts. BW

Reaching a little, but I recently read where one Jeep owner had a knock or rattle, and the tab on the oil float assembly that stops the up swing was bent, and the float went up too high and a rod was hitting it. That's a new one to me. I'll check that on my next two go devils. Oil

Adjusted valves back to .14. I'd almost say it sounds worse. I pulled the spark plug cables one at a time while running. I can't hear any difference... Other than the stumble you would expect to hear. I just can't seem to isolate the noise. I hear the knock no matter where I put my "hearing rod". On top...around the valves on 2 and 3, the noise has a higher pitch.
What causes a knock on top? Again, I don't know that it's on top, but I've looked at all the stuff underneath...except the wrist pins. I'll be checking them tomorrow.
I don't understand . I was just driving along, then all the sudden...knock, knock., knock...like something broke.
When I adjusted the valves, could I have caused some kind of pre-ignition?

1) It will be less distracting, no wind and no fan/belt noise. I do it at work all the time 2) Because I said so . Lee

Try turning it over by hand, maybe remove the plugs so it turns easy. See if there is anything you may feel or hear. Lee
