Ah! Thanks for the info and the link, Capt. Lee. I did do some reading on Robin Olds. If anyone wants to read about it from a source a little less "dry" than Wiki, I found this write-up to be fun: robin olds write-up @ badass of the weekJeff: Thanks for the link to the book. I'll put it on the list. I can think of 2 guys to pass the book along to after I read it.

Rudy, back when the History channel had history, not made for TV Dramah shows, they did a 2 hour special on Robin Olds, fascinating man!.

I saw that on American Heroes Channel (used to be The Military Channel) not too terribly long ago, a series called "American Aces". Lots of very cool stuff on some even cooler aviators. Oh how I wish I could once ... all these damned C-17s flying about and me still not being able to bribe my good buddy to get a flight ... (Trivia: Name the first American Ace flying a C-17)

Uninstalled a feature last weekend. When I bought this bucket, the seats were beat. Plywood pans, boat cushions for seat bottoms, old painter's tarp for seat covers, no foam at all on the driver's back.
It WAS fun to inform passengers, "And in the event of a water landing, your seat bottom cushion can be used as a flotation device."
I got walck's pans, modern foam from Lin for xmas, and not quite stock black covers and put them on last weekend. Everything fit very well. They look so nice, I put the crappy wal-mart seat covers back on to keep 'em nice for at least a little while longer.

Remember all the concern and effort I put into the tragic engine noises Last summer? Check out this little snippet about the champion engine. (I think mine is a 1951)
"...The bodies on all post-war Champs were far heavier than those for which the engine was designed. A peculiar knock, which we called "torsional vibration" became a serious service complaint by 1951. Engineering said it was caused by the light duty crankshaft actually twisting under load, and throwing the pistons out of phase. So for the 1955 model, a new crankshaft was installed with much larger mains...engineering could project that at 4000 rpm it should produce 100 hp. It was the sales department that made it 101!" -Earle Haley
The 185" engine actually should have been rated at 90hp. (10 more than my 170" engine.) My decked lark head should have my 170" +.040 around 90 hp at sea level too. I gotta get a tachometer in there to keep it under 3800 rpm!

Joe and I took the Jeeps to go get lunch last weekend. Then, Joe wisely extended our 2H trip to Wellington Lake. Joe's V8 does wet dirt road burnouts for MILES!

Valve adjustment day. You can leave the manifold on...if you take off the fender. x

I think I see a crack!!!!!! Mee too!, most likely from the noisey rods beating on the inside.

A crack? what? How can you see a crack under all that dirt and grease?!
Just 'cause all the freeze plugs were popped out when I bought it, and there is at least one known crack in the head doesn't mean the block is cracked too.
I think you guys are just confused by the sheer NUMBER of valves compared to the go devil engine.
Oh yeah and that's not noisy rod bearings. That is the sound of "torsional vibration" an "increasingly common complaint" on the Champion 6 engines. (exaberated because I think someone machined down the vibration damper so it doesn't hang so low under the engine.)
/me laughs

I believe the noise is caused by that crack going open and shut. Should increase as the crack widens. Don't you think so Lee?

Yup, the "Bars-Leaks" will soften on the next Crook City Challenge, may ventilate the block!

Bars-Leak? We can't get that up here anymore. All we can get due to EPA regulations is "slowsdowntoatrickle-leak."
Hey do you think that spray on crack sealer stuff you see on TV would help? I mean they turned a screen door into an airboat and tested it up against a real live Florida alligator or somethin', right?
Increased heat is right. It was +39F in the valley on the way to work yesterday. I've run the heater on the way to work the last 2 days in a row. Guess I better tune up the snowblower.
When the block does ventilate, Rest assured it will start cooling better. Always a silver lining with me. (maybe that silver lining is really just AlumAseal?)

Rudycon just can't be shaken. Steadfast and at the ready. I forgot to ask what thickness and type of plywood do you prefer to sleep on? ?? OilLeaker: Thanks for the concern! I find that a seasoned piece of 3/4" indoor 5ply is preferable to all other options. Birch, while imminently classy on its own, lacks a certain je ne sais quio when paired with the US Army camouflage Gore-Tex bivy sack. Plywood that has turned south of cheese and is filled with worms provides more "give" but can often host other insects resulting in an itch a man can't scratch.
