That last remark, Leaker, reminds me a picture of (I think) another restored M37. The guy painted in a cursive style "dirty little wench" across the hood of his bumper.
As for my winch, I don't have a snatch lock or the chain. One day I would like to finish off the WC with one. But still doubt I will ever use the machine. I'm too chickensh!t to teach myself. And there isn't a soul nearby with experience to school me on it. As for my other wench, she has a snatchblock...but I'm not allowed to play with it.

At least at the top of this page is A LOT of good info for me to study about dead horses and stuff.

What??! Whatever, dude.
I don't have a snatch block....for the WC's wench, at least.
However, I wish we could talk more about those and what type of one I should be trolling for, but this thread is probably more for postwar civvy jeeps and not the macho trucks of WW2.
I dare someone to go on Craigslist and type "snatch block" into the search function.

So you need some winch content, eh?
Well after I put my tire back on the rim tonight, I hooked the willys PTO winch up to this field expedient A-frame rig and pulled another stump out of the yard. The Neighbor Kid was kind enough to hold the a-frame up until the legs dug in, then wisely got out of the way. My wife did the video work. The engine slowed down for sure, but the shear pin held, the winch held, the cable held, the chain stayed on the stump and the a-frame legs creaked and cracked, but held.
I hate hitting these stumps with the lawn mower. Only about 10 more to go!

Ok...so I'm trying to "contribute" to this thread. Here is a picture of my winch in use. I'm trying to pull my WC forward, out of my side yard. I have to admit, the truck was heavier than I thought, and the winch didn't work too well.

Ok, sorry about septic Sir Captain. Now getting back to winches, another way to pull stumps or fence posts with a winch is to run the cable over a wheel that has no tire on it. It levers up, rolls with the cable, adds power to the action. A slick trick. Also, there has been mention of a shear pin. These are pins that go through one of the u joints in the pto shaft. They are supposed to shear off before damage occurs to the winch gears or snapping the cable. My Deuce came with extras and a hammer and punch in the toolkit. When you put 16000 lbs of pull on things, you have exceeded the design parameters. I made a rule to my own liking after looking at winch jeeps for sale that were literally twisted and bent. Only winch on something that doesn't weigh more than than your vehicle. Don't try and pull a dumptruck out with a Willys. Tieing off the rear of the winch truck to a tree is not a good idea. Ever see a rear hitch that was bent out and up? People think jeeps are indestructable. That's how they get destructed. The Gomers and their ideas. I chock the wheels with firewood, rocks or if you are calculating, real wheel chocks. Ever see a wreckers wheel chocks? They have teeth that dig into the ground on the bottom and a chain that goes upwards and ties off the the frame or deck so it can not roll over the chock. The front of the wrecker comes up off the ground when you are at it's limits. Go to utube sometime and type in Wrecker winching. You'll see some action there brother. Wow. PS--------I hate septic systems LOL, John

I've read about them on real forums (haha!), had a feint idea as to their purpose, but did not realize where they were affixed to. Several months back when I replaced the clutch in the WC, I had to remove the PTO shaft to make room for the transmission. That must have been the shear pin that had me momentarily stymied while on my back. I thought it was junk so I tossed it in the bushes. Just kidding. I didn't toss it...but at the time, I had no idea that it was the shear pin! I bought another couple off of eBay (maybe from Tom Wolboldt) to reside in my tool kit. Slowly, but surely, you guys will school me.

my winch has no shear pin, I've thought of putting one in but it wasn't originally in the design and to do it i would have to figure out where i wanted it and modify that spot some. still debating it.

HG...don't go getting off topic again! We've finally righted this leftwinged ship.
And I was using that box correctly. Once I pulled my truck over, I was going to box it up and ship it to Oilleaker. I saw Radar do it with a jeep once in M*A*S*H.

Studebilly's Mystery Winch...still a mystery. At oilleaker's suggestion, I sent some images off to Herm the Overdrive guy. Herm responded in minutes. Nope. Herm doesn't know who made my little 7.25" winch either.
*shrugs* I'll take good care of it. Getting replacement parts for an unknown winch might be...tough.
