Haines said it right...what language are you guys speaking? I feel as dumb as Haines looks singing Xmas jeep songs.
However, I think the winch is my next WC project. A winch is a winch, right? And what's up with saddling a dead horse?
Bo!
PS...I can't wait to make my winch dirty!

Moose, when clamping a cable end that is threaded through the hook and then back on itself, the clamp has a saddle and u bolt. When you install the clamp, the loose cable end needs to be put against the u bolt and not the saddle part. The loose end is the "Dead Horse". Thus: never saddle a dead horse. Apparently It won't hold under a pull the other way in the clamp. Now you are ready for a wench, Oh, I mean winch. John

Well said oilleaker, I will add, The winch cable between the winch and the load or hook is the "Live Wire", the tail of the cable after the hook is the "Dead Wire", so there is the dead horse . Lee

To add to this thread, a interesting fact about winching is the -------"snatchblock". Basically a pulley with a hook or attachment that has a hinged opening. You can winch around a corner with them. You open the snatch or hinge and put your "live wire" on the pulley and then close the snatch. For trees as a anchor, a nylon heavy strap is recommended. The Farce Circus takes a dim view of you girdling the tree with a chain. The most amazing part is using the snatch block by attaching it to the vehicle you are trying to pull on, and returning the live wire to your vehicle. You are doubling the cable and doubling the pulling capacity. So, if you have a 8000 lb winch, you now just upped it to 16000lbs of pull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That my friends is how you bend a Jeep in a U shape. Or pull the front bumper off, or leave the axles in the mud hole and skid the frame out. On you tube, there is a video of a Deuce pulling down the tree the cable is hooked to. Make sure the tree height is less than the distance to the vehicle! Or--------------WANG! Winch with care! John

Very cool Schimmmmmmms, you have been very quiet lately, now I know why, a busy bee . The winch looks great, one question, is it supposed to be offset like that?. Lee

lee i do not believe so. when i took it out of the bumper stuff i saw that the PO had moved the fairlead over and re welded it down swell as there were 2 sets of holes for the winch to mount to. i choose to keep it offset like he head it purely because rewelding it would be a lot of work for not a very big difference. and actually this allows the drive shaft to play a bit nicer with my exhaust by the look of it. but we will find out more as i start driving it and seeing how all the stuff clears. i also have to wind it up still and i will be cutting the wire short because as you can see it will hit my lower grill bar. the manual says to remove this bar if i want more wire on it but i think i don't need that much wire, i plan on putting some sort of tool box on or in the bed and that will carry extra chain and such for if i need a longer pull as well as other things.

I use my Dodge M37 when I get firewood. Once in a while I'll hang the tree because it went the wrong way even with a wedge in the back cut. Tuffy has a 10,000 lb winch on him with 1/2 inch cable. I can choker the butt (love those words) and pull the tree down with my winch. The trees butt literally digs down into the ground a foot deep. Awesome power that scares me to death thinking about what would happen if things go wrong. I can't imagine the power Ellsworth has with the big Deuce and a half winch with larger cable yet. Ellsworth came with two snatchblocks and a very heavy chain. The truck weighs 13,500 lbs and that winch will drag the whole truck like a toy. Winches are a masculine thing. Like flexing a arm muscle. You need to have fear of them in order to be safe. They will kill you if you don't. The other very dangerous unit is called a wench.------Oh Oh. Here we go. John
