The whole time since I had the Jeep running it shifted hard and usually ground shifting into third no matter what rpm or how quick or slow I shifted. Several jeepers where I live suggested different gear oil. Some said they are like that. My 47 back in the early 80s wasn't like this. Happened upon some postings on other forums I am on and they made mention of loose shift forks.
So I took off the shift tower and checked it out. Yep, shifter fork slop all over the place. Have two spare transmissions and transfers so put on a new snub tower and a new jeep.

After I got the new generator put in I had left the old regulator in as it was working. With the new generator installed I took it for a spin to check things out. Went to another jeeper to chat some. On the way back I stopped at a light and was told I had a headlight out. Figured it was just a ground.
When I got home I checked the wires and idled it while checking the lights and the high beam went out on one and the low beam was already out on that one. Looked at them closely and sure enough they had blown. My heart sank as these were brand new Seelites from Debella at $42 a pop. Posting for some used ones themoose74 posted me a link as to how he fixed his.
I got on e-bay and purchased two 6v 45/40 bulbs for $15 shipped. They came in today. I took apart one light and put soldered the new bulb in. It works fantastic.
Oh, and I didn't mention that I put the other regulator in and it charges 6.5V not the 9.5v that my old regulator did. I was turned up for the 8v battery that was in it. I had heard that it was common in cold weather to do that and turn up the regulator. I never thought to check the regulator before I hooked up all the lights.
Live and learn. Never to old to learn. Seems a never ending cycle.

That is some good stuff! I can't believe how quickly the bulbs arrived and how quickly you jumped right in. Check that sidestep of your list. What's the next item on Short Round's punch list?

What's the next item on Short Round's punch list? I put a WWII fuel gauge and Amp gauge in. Need the proper oil and temp gauge yet. Also need blackout light switch and marker light switch and proper main light switch. Need gauge lights. Need to fashion a glove box. And I plan to make a fake gas tank sump in the future.

Can you post the old link for the replacement bulbs you found on eBay? The ones I acquired had a thin skirt around their base that I had to remove. Yours looked like they slid right in! I love the fact that you salvaged your sealed beams. We are single handedly trailblazing us away from our throw away society status.

Also my lights were the new replica ones. So they were made to fit the new current 6v bulbs as opposed to you putting new bulbs in original Seelites.

Love the look on the two youngins faces! You have the best "clone" WW2 Jeep I've ever seen. Job well done! There are very few WW2 vets left and it is a honor to talk with those guys. Some of the survivors of the nasty korean War are also amazing guys. Thanks for the photos! John

Well my transmission and transfer cases are leaking around all the gaskets I did not replace. Also it grinds a little in 3rd. Sometimes not but most times a little. It did more till I replaced the shift tower with tight forks. So I took apart transmission #2 to make sure it was good for resealing and a lot of pitting in the needle bearing areas. All else looks in good shape.

I took apart transmission #1 that was in the plow jeep as it worked great and I never had a problem with it. Wrong. It was rebuilt at one time and I guess either being in a plow jeep killed it or it was rebuilt incorrectly. broken teeth, burnt and blue gears, broken and bent slinger, missing needle bearings and retainers. What a mess. Worn needle bearing surfaces and galled bushing surfaces on the housing. And the wrong gear lube as it ate away at the brass sync gears.

Sir Turocy helps me out. Got the Transmission shafts in today along with the rebuild kit from Walcks. And a great find of uniform stuff in a yard sale posted in Jeep Accessories. Plan to work on the transmission tomorrow. Opened the door and out of nowhere there was a (must have been 50 yellow jackets) come at me. Were did they come from? Weren't there all the day before. Only got stung once but am now allergic. Didn't have to use the Eppi Pen. Lucky. But OUCH!!!!!!!!
Lot of beer and a Hydrocordone and a prednisone. Feeling better already.
The trans shafts look great. Thanks Bo!

Sir Turocy is one heck of a great guy ! But you have to understand something.
He is smart , knowledgable , and above all a good sport. ! He holds back on this forum , believe it or not, because he is far more comedic in real life !
As much smashing that we do here ! Bo is one of my best good friends.. And all because of Jeeps and WW2 Veterans we loved.
I don't believe any member here is here by accident . And I know , we will go on to do great things in the. "Representing World" Ain't it. Cool !!
I love when I get to read something that happens amongst the Jeep Band Of Brothers ... That is just makes my day!

Been working on the transmission and transfer case. Transmission is done. And now working on the transfer case. Boy are these things busy. I think it was leaking from every possible gasket and seal. I hope now it will not leak and of course stay cleaner. Maybe a couple of pics tomorrow.

I know jeeps are supposed to mark their place. But I'm going to have go out and buy some Depends. That's why I have to get this done. I don't mind a weep, all these seals and gaskets must be shot. Thanks, HG.

Worked on the transfer case these last couple of days. There are just too many places it can leak from on these thing. Man they are busy with seals and gaskets. The gears inside were in very good condition from my Transfer case #1 (first jeep, plow jeep). Bearings were good as well. So it was taken apart, surfaces were cleaned and new seals and gaskets were replaced. All the debris, brass and metal the migrated over from the transmission was flushed out and Bearings were cleaned and lubed. Transfer pan with metal and brass from the transmission. Gears looking good. Rear output and brake assembly installed and safety wired. Four wheel drive housing cleaned and ready for install. Selector housing installed and safety wired.

When trying to mate the transmission to the transfer it kept binding the lower gear set and reverse idler gear. Way too much drag and nearly impossible to turn. The transfer case was a 41xxx number. I initially thought it was the length of the bolts. Tried a shorter bolts. Same thing, binding. Took a look at the transmission cases on both ones I took a part and looked a both transfer cases. The 41xxx transfer cut outs for the lower shaft rod and reverse idler rod are totally different. The 41xxx has only a small cutout for the shim holding the shafts as the later 52xxx has a larger cutout that accepts the shims in the rebuild kits. Notice the small cutout for the shim. Once I modified the shim and bolted things back together all worked fine and it shifted through all gears with no binding. And on #59xxx you can see the larger cutout of a bigger shim and no chance of warping the cases when bolted together. This had me puzzled for a bit till I went back and forth and looked closely at both transfer cases.
