Today played with the 42 GPW dash I am going to use. It is from a Non-Script GPW tub I am going to restore. The cowl was pretty bad from a good hit in the front end. I have a replacement cowl with a good dash and glove box so this rusted dash became a donor for my "Clone" project. You can see the work I need to do on the bottom edge (rusted) and the glove box opening (rusted). After a good straightening it doesn't look too bad does it? And a test fit.

Nothing ever seems to go as fast as you first think. And...Dad's words seem to keep echoing on this project, "Anything worth doing is worth doing right". So with that out of the way: More work on the dash. Notice the exceptional wear on the bottom edge of the dash and around the glove box door. This was removed and a new piece from the DJ3A dash (with more gauges in it than the space shuttle) was used for repairs. New piece from DJ dash set and ready for welding. Welded and cleaned up. What I hadn't noticed is the indent for the glove box door is still done even though there was no longer a glove box. Still need to do the edging in the glove box for the door seal.

Now on to making the glove box seal trim. I cut some 20 ga sheet stock and put it on a piece of wood I cut to make the bends on each side. Next it was set in place and the corners were bent. It was fitted and then the cutout for the door spring was cut in. Now clamped down for welding. Welded in place and final forming done. Now on to the upper part. This was a lot more work then I anticipated.

Forming the upper seal trim for the glove box. I clamped it to a milled 2 x 4 and proceeded to tap down the edge to look like the original. The final piece ready to be bent in installed. Installed and ready for the dash to be put in the tub. This was more work than I had imagined. But now I don't need to go back and try to fit it while in the jeep.

Well...the dash is in. I don't think it will be coming out anytime soon. I did a lot of little things like filling hole of which there are many. Welding and grinding, welding and grinding, welding and grinding...

Tonight I worked and the rear of the tub for a change. I am putting in military type signal holes. They will be a little more outboard unlike the original ones. I did not want to cut into the bed to put them in the proper position. This will work out fine and get rid of the many hole the PO put in for too many lights on the rear and the rust. Set up for placement is the section I made. The same is going to go on the other side as well.

Had the circles laser cut for me at a sheet metal shop close to work. Welded the panel in today and the welds are Being new to this gas welding, I did some internet checking and 99% chance it is the gas. So I will take the bottle back and get a new one. The two bottles before were perfect. All else checks out fine on the welder.

After this one I am really going to do a real military jeep. This is giving me the hands on and insight to do the next project properly. The darn bad gas for welding made a mess of my patch panel but I can save it with a little bondo. Yeah, got to use some. Not as much as was on this tub when I got it thought. LOL. Darn Evan Williams before bed is making a mess of my typing skills.

Since I was already on the back panel I continued to do some more changes. I took out the two center braces that were there for the rear center mounted tire bracket. I then put in a hat channel like the military jeeps. I also put a couple of dowels for support where the lower military tire bracket will mount. I will put in the triangular braces in tomorrow.

Made some braces on for the back panel that help support the extra weight like tire and gerry can. It's nice to have both a GPW and MB tub to get measurements off of to do this. The braces on the GPW. The brace I made. The brace now welded in place. I did this instead of bolting it like the GPW as if I remember correctly the MBs are. My MB tub had the panel cut out for a tailgate so I couldn't check.

Sanded the back panel after I filled a million holes. The bondo was thick. Now I see why. Looks like a Army ball peen hammer brigade attacked the rear of my jeep. No hope in me getting all these hammered out. I measured my GPW and drilled out the holes for the tire carrier and mounted it. I also made a template of the Gerry Can support panel, made one and clamped it in place. With the tire and gerry can it will cover up much of the rear panel. So...should I skim coat with bondo to get most of the dimples out or just leave it?

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with body filler. I do have a problem with its abuse, and miss use. My vote, use some..you have come this far. Put the icing on the cake.

If it has a few waves no problem but this is just a mess. So bondo it is. G503 guys go ballisitc over bondo.
