Finally installed a horn. Not a military but a correct Autolite with the long NOS trumpet. It was my original horn from my 46 CJ2A with the very short trumpet. I got the long NOS one off of the G503. This is 6V and it is loud. Could have used it a couple of times already. Now it is on.

Short Round finally got an Artillery item today. A Pak 75 crate I bought about three months ago arrived. Fits perfect on the wheel well and a great place to store stuff. Looking at another for the other fender right now. And it is marked the same date as this one.

Between now and the next adventure (JULY 18th at the National D-Day Memorial), Short Round is going to get some much needed servicing. Maybe the motor mounts too. But Oil leaks on the oil pressure gauge on block, oil leak by filler tube in block, oil leaks on pan gasket (two broken bolts), oil leak on valve cover and pcv tube. New u-joints (70 year old ones still on). Trans and Transfer leaks (new gaskets and seals already) will have to wait till new second gear and sincro for 2/3 gears. Fun awaits the arrival of new parts.

It's the Family Day 40s Festival at The National D-Day Memorial. There will be several of my friends with Jeeps and displays there. It is a time where we can represent our own service as well as others. Family Day 40s Festival

Finally had some time to start on my Bubba motor mounts. They were a mess. Since the engine had a CJ2A front plate they cut the CJ3A mounts off and mad some up instead of just an adapter. Quite a mess. Got the old one off. Did run into a slight problem. The CJ3A frame is thicker where the mount goes than the CJ2A frame so some minor fab work will be required to make this work. I will have to cut off the bottom edge of the mount and make a sort of L bracket to make it work.

Passenger motor mount modified and fitted. The drivers side doesn't have any washers even though it is quite Bubba'd. I shall leave it for now as I have a parade on the 4th and need Short Round up and running.

The first picture is the old drive shaft. Not only were the u - joints and extension section worn out but it had taken a hit at some time and is bent. Next are new u - joints and then installed.

Rear drive shaft with new u-joints. Funny how you don't realize the play in 70 year old u-joints till you take the drive shaft off.

After sealing the oil fill tube base again, new oil pan gasket, new valve cover gasket and valve adjust, sealing the fuel pump (after finding the mating surface in not flat and caused the initial leak at the bottom).
After an 18 mile run the only leak noticeable is on the fuel pump again. Not at the base like before but at the primer lever, the base is not leaking now.
This is getting ridiculous. Any fixes for the aftermarket military style fuel pump other than an oil diaper?

I never tried it before. I never measured that shaft, but if it's leaking at the primer shaft, then maybe bushings? Other than that, live with it or 86 it.

Well since I still have issues after my Transmission recondition, like leaks and popping out of second, I got some new stuff coming. A new second gear, new second/third syncro, gaskets, seals and new needle bearings for the transmission and seals for the transfer.
I got most of the leaks stopped on the engine but still some around the fill tube. Any special tricks on that? And what seems to be some leaking on the bell housing but that seems to come from the felt seal on the input shaft.

If the oil filler tube is a bit wobbly, pull it out and tap a deep well socket of the correct size into it to expand and smooth out the round. Re-install.

Thanks, I did think of that but put a little sealer on it instead. Better but still a light weep.

Just seems to be a weep on the bell housing but I think that may be the front transmission felt seal. Put a new bearing kit as well as second and synchro gear in the transmission. All new seals and gaskets in the transfer as well. This is my other trans and transfer on the shelf. Was thinking of putting them in this week but it runs and shifts well enough to do The National D-Day Memorial on 7-18-15 before I put this stuff in.

Can't afford to let a Burma Campaign Veteran down. If the rear main is actually leaking then I need to fix that while the trans is out. Besides I need "Short Round" spiffy for October in case HG needs to ride Shot Gun.

Well, on the way back from the Vinton Dogwood Festival Parade yesterday about 18 miles from how a horrible racket in the motor and sudden drop in power happened. Temp stayed steady at speed 165 deg and oil pressure was 55 psi at 43 mph. Did not change power was not bad but less than adequate. Made it home the last 18 miles and the engine will idle fine with a sort of constant tick. Starts easy as well, just a loss of power under load. Took off the valve cover thinking it was a broken spring and also found a small exhaust leak by #4 cylinder in the manifold. Well took off the head and it was pretty easy, not snapped bolts. Seems that Short Round had a heart attack. Number one cylinder is broken. Came apart above the top piston ring. On the bright side this engine was untouched from new and pistons are standard bore. So it is ripe for good overhaul. That will have to wait for later as I do have the early 46 motor out of my first jeep and it ran perfect. It is 60 over and looks like is was done recently before that jeep was parked. So a reseal and into Short Round it will go. Piston broken on the Supersonic. I put 6K on this motor in the last two years and the speedo on the Jeep I got it out of was around 39k. So not too bad for age.
