I'm too new to this to diagnose anything by ear, let alone with ONLY words. I'd be too scared to do ANY of what you did anyway, but maybe if I ever get this thing back together we could work on mine to see if I have a similar issue - I also have that exhaust pop! ( sorry to hijack your thread )

Get her set following the procedure you’ve already been through and set the idle at 650-700. That should be it. Happy trails!

For everybody else that logs in or lurks, this is the link of Scoutpilot's that I found just before Christmas. I think he may have posted it on Facebook. Knowing I had always had the high idle RPM issue, I decided to venture down this road to smooth it out, Timing the engine linkIt was during this routine that I found something amiss. All credit goes to Scout for finding the culprit.

Our Scout Pilot is a valuable knight to have on board. Give him Jerkey and whiskey when he visits. As long as it doesn't kill him please!!!!!!!!! He has done me right many times and others here. My hats off to him. Oilly

Awesome! Amazing that Scout could diagnose that from your description! One thing that I am most humbled by, and love about this forum, is that all the true Jeep Guys reside here. There are bigger sites out there. You will not get the connection that you do here. Knights Of The Jeep Round Table.

Since I had nothing better to do on this frigid Thursday, I thought I'd muck up my perfectly running jeep. Hey, have I mentioned that prior to about an hour ago, it's the best it's ever ran?
The last few nights, I had a huge mental burden weighing upon my mind: I knew Lee wasn't feeling good about my upside down distributor. It was beginning to drive me crazy, too.
So, I dropped my oil pump and pulled the distributor. It's all back together now...I just need to go back outside and see if it will start and then fine tune it...again.

If it aint broke fix it till it is! Ain't that the truth! This story has a happy ending. Jeep is buttoned up, tuned up and driven around town already! She still sounds excellent. So now Lee and I can sleep peacefully tonight.

Did you use your under hood oil can and oil the distributor bushing by pulling the knurled sleeve back and exposing the oil feed hole? I took a lot of joy in doing that, Oilly! That reminds me, I probably ought to hit up the generator, too.

C'mon Cap'n....get to feeling better. This just doesn't feel right without you heckling me with tough love.
Ok, next up on my punch list: the parking brake. It's hooked up and it will go through the motions, but if I were on one of those mountains with you guys, I'd be one of the majority wedging a rock behind a tire.
Here's the small amount of history with it...
All the pieces were there, with the exception of the cable. It was cut from my gorgeous little F handle. I bought a NOS cable, but the package might've been dated from the 60s. I was a bit skeptical to begin with.
I'll report back after I've been under the jeep. That may or may not be today.

Yeah...I couldn't contain myself...I went and crawled around the underside. I am missing two of the three sheath clips. That's easy enough. I have some spare clips. Originals, too. I am missing one screw: the one that goes into the passenger side spring adjustment. A1020, is the part number. By the way, I have the GPW external type brake. However, the biggest issue is in the cable itself. I bought a NOS internal replacement cable. I recall why, now, too. Back in the day, the general consensus was that the repro external cables were of really poor quality. I've got the original hand bracket that I wanted to reuse. There really wasn't any options other than buying a repro handle and cheesy cable together. I've got an idea I am going to try first to see if I can get my existing cable to still do the job. If not, I'll need to source the little eye-bolt type piece that is on the end of the repro cable. Anyone know what that piece might be called and where I might could find it? Seems like something McMaster-Carr would sell. external ebrake assembly

Are you describing a clevis? No, not a clevis pin. Those went with the internal brakes. I do have one of those. The doohickey I need looks almost like a large electrical wire eyelet that you could solder the brake assembly wire into.

Cable end eyelet. I simply replaced my F script handle on to the new stepped shaft. Those are screw type rivits that hold the handle to the shaft. Possibly cut a slot in the shaft end to slip the cable out, but It is different inside. In other words, I used all but the handle of the new cable. The old shaft that the handle fits on is hollow and the new one is solid . Why they didn't have a slot with a round removal port in the shaft similar to a CJ3A or 2A is a mystery. I think I had to remove the crimped ends so the inner steel sheath would fit the cable stops with the bolt through them. On the passenger side of the brake band, which bolt are you missing? The bolt with the wire tie head? Then there is the big candy cane shaped bolt, and the small screw headed bolt with two jam nuts. Oilly

That would've just been the icing on the cake if you had actually lost money (along with your time!) helping me. As funny as it sounds, I couldn't let that happen. ...and I was just paranoid that my package wasn't going to make it to you. I gambled on it and did not pay for insurance...obviously...among other things!
