2 min to remove it.....
So I'm guessing 15 min to rebuild and re-install?? You'll have that done before the coffee's ready!

I rebuilt the transmission yesterday with the help of the Rick Stivers video. Rick's written guide takes much of the mystery out of a rebuild but the video takes all of it out. What a huge help.

In the guide, how much mainshaft end float did it say? You have to bolt it up to the transfercase and torque the rear gear on to really check it. I'm wondering about the overdrive relationship. Most likely very little end float or the OD will malfunction. I'm in the middle of this myself, but I have way more time in just cleaning and scraping than you showed here------LOL. Oilly

Well Oilly if it makes you feel any better I'm hen-peck typing with greasy fingers now after completely disassembling and cleaning not one but two transfer cases today. Gross. And the second one had to be pulled from a jeep carcass in a sand pit "out in the wild" when I realized my first one had issues with both the front and rear bearing caps. It'll take me a week to clean myself up from this mess.
Anyways, I don't think the video (or the written guide?) makes any mention of mainshaft endplay but I know you can't have much without it creating issues with your OD. At least that's what I'm told. Or maybe I did read it in there? I must have. I'm not smart enough to know that on my own. Sorry...was too much grease wicking into my pores right now.
Prior to yesterday, that mainshaft had as much play as your average slide hammer - it was a disaster. Now it has virtually none. I'd read back through the guide again but I'm thinking you have already done that by now.
I know it's a bigger headache on the transfer case as there are shims and dial indicators involved - two of my least favorite things LOL.

I'm with you brother in the filth and grease dept. Mine was converted to home made asphalt. Some took a hammer and chisel to get off mine. Not fun. I'm going to measure the spacers and snap rings to tighten up all the movement possible. Possibly gasket thickness, and outer bearing race differences between it and the machined recesses they fit into. New small parts kit, new 2nd, new 3rd, new synchro collar and new blocking rings, and new bearings. I want mine to not move. My '49 3 A has enough end float it will sometimes make some contact noise with the ramsey winch power take off. Irritating. Oilly

Hahahahahaha! I'm inspired, too. I just found your T90 rebuild video, too. The music reminded me of a mission impossible style movie. And, was that workbench in your garage, or...real estate office?!

And, was that workbench in your garage, or...real estate office?! The line between each is often very fuzzy....

The past couple weeks of Ring Gear & Transmission Hell seemed to have finally paid off. I logged 150 flawless miles up to Moosehead Lake yesterday with sustained hour-long 50+mph drives each way. If you want to induce a drivetrain leak that's a good way to do it. This morning all I have under the Jeep is a few drops of engine oil, presumably from the rear main seal. Given the torture test it endured yesterday I am very pleased. This 3A is running superbly right now. The combined engine and trans gear whine noise is sewing machine smooth. Shifts are crisp and being able to accelerate up long hills is a welcomed novelty. Sure is fun during those rare times the planets align themselves correctly and everything is as it should be. Oh yeah, before I embarked on my marvelous journey I swapped out the master cylinder on the gray 3A. While doing so the master cylinder bracket swung down and karate chopped my eye socket. Always wear you safety glasses kids!

Um, Ya, Right Ryan. More like "Honey there's a Smokin deal on rusty jeep parts and we can just park the non-rollers on the front lawn"

No it was from the chick who isn't impressed with overdrives. He thought she would just jump into his lap. This could have been the wife you know! Yard art isn't her thing? Jeep sure sounds top dog there Ryan. Well done you Real estate wrench! Oilly

I currently have 7 jeeps "out in the wild" that I need to go pick up and haul home whenever I can find the time to do it. When my wife finds out she may blacken the other eye.
The Willys Hauler was in the shop today getting some upgrades in preparation for all this upcoming work. I'm anxious to put them to the test.
