A little more lipstick on this pig tonight. Happiness truly is an Advanced Adapters box arriving at your office on a Friday afternoon right before you skip out for the weekend. I found the endplay in the transmission mainshaft here to be about the same as your average slide hammer - less than ideal. I'm going with it anyways though. This is a bomber. Short tests in the dark tonight with a raised plow virtually blocking all of the light thrown by the headlights proved successful. I didn't hit a tree and the overdrive shifts. Good stuff.

Two first gears on the fly while plowing would be good. Did you install all the shims or measure and then put in the right amount of shims? Oilly

You are talking about shims that go over the main shaft before installing the OD onto it, right? If so, two more questions: 1. How do you measure for shims? 2. Will I do any damage to the OD by not having any? It doesn't grind or pop out of gear.

From what I've read, unless shimmed correctly they don't shift very good. Grind etc. If yours shifts fine then don't worry about it.

I'm with Ryan, not sure what shim's your referring to? I don't recall shims on mine, and it seems to work OK.

One of you guys told me it came with a set of shims and a measurement was to be taken and shimmed to a certain amount. Maybe Muley told me. Anyway, they called Herm and he got mad and said just put all the shims in it. ?? I don't have one------------yet. oilly

Ya if it works use it. I had to shim the ATV OD from Herm. The specs provided at time were ambiguous (funkenwagnel is your friend) but all is good now.

Yes, I too have been down the shim-shim-sharoo road with an ATV OD but I just slapped 'em in there per Herm's instructions.
And a light just when off (or on?). When you install the planetary gear it should protrude .677" from the rear face of the transfer case. Mine did here. If it was short, you'd add shimmage until you got your .677".

I had .677 out of the box w/o shims and it was no-go. Got the Red Ass from Herm and added the complete shim pack provided and was WAY over the magic .677 but it works. That's why I was confused is it .677 or is it ain't .677?

Yours looks to be a rebuilt unit cause it's been blasted. Is that a rebuild from Advance? What kind of deal does give you on price? I see Kaiser Willys sells one with shifter for the same price as summit without a shifter. Oilly

It was purchased through Kaiser Willys (with shifter) but was drop shipped from AA after a 5+ week wait (I expected this as it clearly states that on the KW site). Last year I purchased one of these from Walck's and it arrived from them in 3 days. Walck's must stock them? Or the supply was better last year? When I talked to Herm last month he said he stopped selling AA OD's because the lead times were just too long.

The aluminum looks to be blasted to me. It could be a new casting that they did blast to clean up. Expensive devils. I need one though.

The old PE-95 generator is the gift that keeps on giving. I used a scrap piece of it and some flat bar to build a mount for the jerry can bracket to attach to as I needed something that would allow the BesTop to still fasten to the top of the tailgate. I did have to drill holes in the tailgate but it's already in pretty rough shape so a few more holes really isn't going to hurt. I also bolted the tailgate shut for added strength. The sense of urgency to fix my fuel gauge is even less now that I have spare gas all the time fitup inside outside finished

I looked up the story about the .677"! I have about three copies of Advance Adapters "Overdrive Instruction Manual". There is a picture, and instructions on page 21 that say "the planetary hub should only protrude .677" from the face of the transfer case". That translates to between 5/8 and 11/16 in my measurements. I don't even remember checking that measurement, but it works just fine!
By the way Sir Ryan, looks like you lost a chain off the passenger side!! And your can holder looks good!!

Nice, and recycling also, my wife would approve as well!...... That can looks like you've backed into something already!. Actually that can does not seem to do well in fluctuating temps. It expands and contracts like that going from the cold outside to the warm garage and back. I'm not sure how to prevent it short of leaving the cap open a bit and stinking the place up like gas. And Binthere - the chain is accounted for on the right...it's just at the perfect angle to have avoided being seen. Your comment was enough to make me sneak out in the cold darkness in my boxers (not flowered ones like Moose) to double check though!

Nice can mount. Must be an awfully thin can. You need to put one of the old ones on there. They done do that.

Nice can mount. Must be an awfully thin can. You need to put one of the old ones on there. They done do that. I would if I could find one that was useable for a half-way reasonable price. All the ones I've ever come across were too slimy and/or rusted up inside to even consider using without serious work. I'll inevitably pick one up somewhere.

Time to start the motor swap project. Might as well rebuild the trans and TC while I'm in there. That slippery slope has grabbed me again.....
