This is something very cool . My brother in law whom lives in Rochester NY, received a SCFFC Jeep Meet T Shirt from Charleston, SC. He is training for a job in Child Protective Service in Albany, NY. He took the time to drive to Scotia (Home of Grandpa Haines, and his Jeep)...He sent me this photo. I am very touched to say the least.

Back to the build.... I have two important stories to tell....Both of them involving my son. When I first inherited Grandpas Jeep in 2004, it was delivered to me via carrier from Scotia, NY to Mt. Pleasant, SC. We pushed it into the garage, because it would not even sputter when cranked. I charged the battery, and tried for hour to get it started the next day. No luck. My son , at the time come out into the garage, already in bed mind you , he was 9 at the time. "Daddy, what are you doing?" "I am trying to get Grandpas Jeep started , and it's past your bed time." "You,re doing it wrong" he said. "its like this..Jumps into the front seat, taps the gas pedal twice, pushes in the clutch, turns the key, pushes the starter button on the dash, and WHAMMO! Looked at me in my eyes and smiled.... Now the garage fills with smoke, and I shut the engine down. (Look back to the block photos) Carry ScottII off to bed and tuck him back in.... How in the Hell did he know how to do that? He only one time sat in that Jeep when it was parked. He never rode in it, nor saw it started.... This simply amazed me.....Think what you want, I know what happened that day. 100% true story. 1st time i realized the Jeep was really his

Kind of cool thinking of it that way.

Yes the Rollbar is ;D ;D Next part of the Son story... The tub on Grandpas Jeep is TOAST, as you can see from the previous photos. As frugal as we can be, I scrap the unusable steel to provide funds to purchase replacement parts. In cutting up the tub, my son finds a marking , it is the tubs ACM. At the time, I never knew they existed. Here is the kicker...ACM reads 3 11 99 Grandpa Haines died on March 11th 2004, (3-11) The last time he registered the Jeep in NY was 1999. (3 11 99) Coincidence, Maybe...I think otherwise. I was taking pictures just before we found the ACM....

I had two engines when I inherited the Jeep. The blue painted replacement, and the original (has been ID'ed to be correct by an old friend on the CJ2A pages ) I took both blocks, heads, cams and cranks to a very reputable machine shop in Charleston. Both blocks were cracked beyond repair, cams were both good, cranks both were good, one head was cracked. When I took the bad parts to the scrap yard, I flipped a tip to the attendant and said " pull that stuff in my truck out, I don't want't to explain" He did, I drove away........ Bad day that day, felt like my heart was ripped out.

I save what I can. It is most important to me that I do so. I begin to sandblast all savable part to bare metal, prime them in Red Oxide Primer, hand them to cure, then apply paint topcoats, I allow them to cure. My Garage becomes a shine of wind chimes, old Jeep parts saved . Any person in the neighborhood begins to wonder what in the He!! that guy is doing in there. I sandblast in the front yard, paint in a Crepe Myrtle Tree... When the parts are fully cured (I do the 30 day rule) I wrap them in white packing paper, and box them on the shelves. Satay tuned, we will talk about the transfer case/transmission next!

The first Major Component to be rebuilt was my T90 Transmission, and D18 Transfer Case. My brother and I , both have a fond memory of how Grandpa used to say Transmission. It kind of sounded like Truns misson..I can't duplicate in in type.... I stripped them down both completely, sandblasted the cases, primed and painted , cleaned and check all internals, gears, mechanisms, etc. Most of my internals were good. I bought rebuild kits, and gasket kits for both from reputable sources....(remember I said that! ;D )

be really careful if you sandblasted casings. Make sure you have protected all bearing and seal areas. Horror stories on differentials and transmissions that were sandblasted and the sand made its way into seals and bearings from the outside....then failed soon there after. That sand is under pressure and will get into areas you thought impossible.
I sandblasted the rear end on my vette. I took off the pumpkin cover and used my parts washer tub with pump to completely rinse the internals of my differential. Re-lubed everything and rotated all assemblies to re-prime lubrication....

Steve you are 100% correct, I had the same deal when I blasted the front axle. I taped everything up with Gorilla Tape, and still got full of blasting media . Its ok though, I needed to rebuild the front axle anyways.

The Trans Mussion, Transfer Case is not an extremely hard thing to do, let me stress some points....Clean , Clean Clean, and when you think its clean, CLEAN SOME MORE. I use Paint Thinner to remove grease and oil. It works FANTASTIC! A tub filled with 5 Gallons, and various nylon brushes.

Question?, is the paint tree the same as the pee tree or is the paint tree a different tree and do the neighbors get as excited about the paint tree as the pee tree? . Were trans/tc primed at the factory?, May is my friend, likes her ears scratched. Motor together yet?
