Here are a few pics of what I like to build. This is a Christmas gift. The lid and bottom are flat sawn. The sides are hewn and planed from a freshly felled red oak log, carved, assembled and finished with boiled linseed oil.
This is a chest im working on. No power tools what so ever, except for the chainsaw to drop the tree. The tree was at least 30" in diameter. It was split with wedges then a froe, then hewn and planed. Then it was morticed and the grooves were plowed. It was allowed to dry for a few weeks before carving. Then it was assembled with wood pegs.
I have yet to carve the drawer and make the molding. When that's done, the background will be painted with black iron oxide in oil and the entire chest will be coated in boiled linseed oil. The details of the carving will really pop. The only nails are to hold the bottom floor of the chest on. Everything else is pegged.
So, swinging an axe to get useable boards is a workout, but very rewarding. And very frustrating when you are almost done and something goes wrong. The smaller, lighter, hewing axes are no match for oak.
What do you think?

Beautifull !, a true craftsman is rare in today's world...... I have a friend who makes Windsor chairs from the firewood pile, all done by hand with vintage tools, steam bends the parts that require that and NO glue is used in any part of the process...... Outstanding work my friend!.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate all the compliments. I enjoy working with wood. When its too cold or too hot to work on my jeep, I am at my bench doing things with wood.
How we got from vintage axes to here...
Thanks again

I have a friend who builds flintlock rifles. He engraves the wood and the brass pieces. You would do well with gun stocks also. Crafty devils! Oilly

NJT, this is Simply incredible! I'm in awe of your talents, and can't wait to see the finished chest! Albrecht Durer would be proud!

He Oil, Thank you. It sounds like your friend is a real artist. The carving I do is all based on geometry and layed out with a pair of dividers.
Jeff. I will gladly post pics of the finished chest. I still have to carve the drawer front, but the time consuming part will be making the molding plane in order to make the 50 or 60 feet of molding needed. After the holidays I am going to put in some time at the bench. Durer was a real artist and philosopher, I am just a guy who plays with my wood. haha
Binthere, This box is oak. I have never made one out of ash, and traditionally they were always oak usually with pine lids and bottoms. As far as price, I know what a friend of mine sells them for, but I don't think I am at his level. Are you really interested? Send me a message.

Thank you scout. I think your carb, pumps, and filters are works of art. Soon I will be ready to install your rebuilds on my engine. Maybe one day I can start the engine too.

njtool, I meant my ashes! LOL Sorry about that, but it is so fancy that's what I thought of first. I was just curious, I know if you charged by the hour, even Donald Trump couldn't afford one!!

Binthere, The person I learned to carve from gets anywhere from about $550 and up for a box. Depending on how you value hand made stuff, thats not too bad. If you google "17th century carved box" you can see lots of examples of original boxes and reproductions. I love the way they patina, but that takes a couple of hundred years.

WOW That sounds quite reasonable njtool. I have a neighbor that makes urn's that are nowhere near that nice, and if I remember right, he charges up to about $700 Cdn.. Just commenting on the workmanship. One would have to plan aways ahead. HAHAHA

Binthere, I just understood your "Ash-box" comment. Sometimes I'm dense.
