Is there any definitive way to identify the pioneer tools that once belonged on a Willys? I'm always coming across old shovels and axes at auctions and junk shops and often wonder if I'm passing over what could be valuable Jeep accessories. How does one know for sure?

Ah..great question, Ryan. HG is our resident expert. He has studied under the (late) great John Barton who pioneered (no pun intended) the research in this area several years ago. Hopefully HG will give us some of his secrets. Until then, you can click here: ShovelsAxesStill a bit to be discovered...as with all tools...for the jeeps.

Hopefully HG will give us some of his secrets. Until then, you can click here: ShovelsAxesStill a bit to be discovered...as with all tools...for the jeeps. Thanks Moose, but I am no expert, just an enthusiast. John Barton was my sensei , yes.... The links you put up are a start. My favorites are True Temper Kelly Works Flint Edge, Collins Legitumis , Mann, and Warren. I have restored and sold over a hundred axes, and shovels. The trick is modern handles are not correct. I have originals that I pattern my replacements after. I enjoy the axes and shovels as much as I do the Jeeps.. Sir Ryan, I will be bold as to say the axe shovel thing is a military deal. No Willys Civilians had them as accessories. Early CJ2As had the indents on the tub however Captain, the reason I ask about the lengths is that there are some short handled axes for the M38, and M38A1. You head style is correct. Its a Dayton Style Head. 4 pounds. Square back gives it away. Specs on Sir( Most Honorary Title) Bartons Threads are impeccable. WW2 axes. I learned all I know from him, and another sage, that I will not reveal the source....Or he will Kill me....At least that is what I was told

Here is what I think.... You have some M38, M38A1, and maybe even some tank axes there. I have never seen those markings, however, the crown is usually indicative to the Norway/Sweden Area,,,World BEST Axe Head Maker...my opinion. (Solingen Steel is THE BEST! Germany) I focused my attention on the WW2 axes and shovels. There is more to bee seen that can ever been seen, more to do than can ever be done. (That's Lion King) I am going to show you the two that I will never part with... First Up Collins Legitimus Notice the markings, and the original OD Green Paint Second True Temper Kelly Works Flint Edge There is a 4 stamped there, look hard This is what I was telling you in lyric.. SOOOOO...Captain, I do not have the answer to your puzzle...But You have been educated

WW2 Axes 35 1/2"-36 1/2" what I have seen. M vehicles shorter handle in the 32" area.
The 88 stamp is interesting. The curve on your handles looks correct in the pics. If you look at modern replacement handles, they are too thick and will not fit into the tool indent.
A lot of the US Military axes have US or USA marked on them. It is my understanding that Other countries that used Jeep type vehicles installed their own pioneer tools. Lets find out exactly what you have. It is fun....and educational!

Captain please post what you have found out on the G503. I respect that site and its members. Also You have reminded me of what I love to do . I am hunting down shovels, and axes again. It is tools in its purest form...think about it.
