Notice this....There are 10 bolts on the cover of a Dana 41. I am most sure these are originals, A Marked. Two are longer then the rest.. These are for the Brake mounting bracket. I install a new gasket, sealing it both sides with Indian Head Shelac, by Pemetex. I torque the bolts to 25 ft pounds. Do you see anything interesting on the cover?

Next I install the bearings on the axle shafts. I used a brass drift, and a BFH to install these (Look For It In Tools ) Repeat both Short and Long Axle Shafts. I pack the bearing cones installed with high temp grease. This can be done, with patience. Force the grease into the rollers with your fingers...Don't cheat... I insert the axle shafts into place. I lube the inside of the cup with high temp grease, and coat the outside with Permetex #2...you cant be too careful. I drive the cup into place with a brass drift, clean any excess sealants or grease off with a rag.

Sir Haines, did you put a patch of white lithium grease on your ring gear and with some resistance check the pattern? Depth, heel, toe contact? Dial gauge the backlash? They are picky buggers. John

Sir John Of The Black Hills! To answer you question, Yes and kind of no. I did check the backlash with a dial indicator, as well as the carrier endplay with feeler gauges. As far as the pinion and ring mesh. I eyeballed the assembly lube and saw how it squished so to say. Remember this...This is how I am doing it. If it works good for me...Great, If it doesn't...Start over. I am putting back what was removed. I am hoping for the best. At the end of both Dana 25 and 41 Threads, I intend to put links up , to sites and people that are far more knowledgeable than I. I am having a problem setting the axle end play. I spoke with Sir Leemeister this evening about this. I am doing some research . I have far too much axle movement, in and out.

remove your shims from the axles to get the end play less. remove all the shims and tighten the rings down you should have 0 end play then add one shim of equal thickness to each side and try again. measure, if still no end play then add another to each side and repeat. when i did my timken truck end play i lucked out and got .005 or something like that, it was well within spec and i was happy after a long night of hitting the stupid thing with my plastic hammer.

Shim packs on the end of the axle tube underneath the brake plates. Shims first them the thick ring. A 10 thousands play is OK. You'll hear a slight clunk. John

First, you have to have both sides, shims, ring, and brake plate bolted on to test the end play. Usually the race protrudes a little on both sides. Then you hang the shims on the race, then the thicker ring, and then the brake plate. If you have a huge discrepancy from this, the spacer that is in the center where the two axle ends meet may be worn out. If you have end float with no shims when bolted together, this is all you have left to look at. Verstehen Sie! Mein Her! ( saw your license plate ) John

john i don't think you need the brake plate you can do it with just the shims and the big fat ring so you have one less thing to take off when you have to re check shimming.

Luke is also correct, you don't have to put the brake plate on if you don't want to. If the bolts are too long, a few washers will work. I believe the spacer in the center has a elongated hole in the center that the carrier cross pin goes through. The axle ends touch each end of the spacer. Did your rear end have shims to begin with? Start with them sorted evenly to both sides. John

scott, when you do reverse your bearing and such leave the back cover off until the entire thing is done trust me it is much better to have it off than take it off put it on you will have a bunch of things to check in there before it is all over.

We are all human, Lord knows I have made many, in this case no harm done, and lessons learned for us all. I have seen this before, and a very nice M-38 fell into my hands very cheap because of it, a different story for a different time . Now, would the axel work like that?. yes, but if Haines had went ahead and put it together another problem would have come up as he installed the brake drum, it would have stuck out, exposing the brake shoes, was a mistake made, yes, but a sharp eye noticed a problem , too much end play, all well in the end. Lee

I think visiting Haines could now be a dangerous thing. What happens in the garage, stays in the garage. You may never leave that garage. Where would you like your axle sir! John

I'd say I'm sorry you installed the bearings incorrectly but without that there would be no "Restitution" video. Hilarious. If we get one of those every time you make a mistake, well, I'm rooting for you to continue screwing up. All I get when I make a mistake is usually some sort of bloody knuckles and a flying tool or two.
