Oh....this might become quite the pickle of the situation! On one hand, it's my wife...I can TOTALLY convince her that it's an EASE. On the flip side, she is my wife and could give a rats @ss about me and the poll...soooooo she would definitely vote it as IS. I'm going to wait about approaching her...maybe I'll buy her a gourmet coffee in the morning and then ask.

Crap. I just broached the subject to her. She looked at me, and in her best political voice said, "It's a proper name. Who are we to decide how it's pronounced." And then she rattled of four or five historical footnotes in history pertaining to names and various pronunciations. Grrrrrrrrrr. No coffee for you tomorrow! PS...Oilleaker...I'm on your side (I think!). It's pronounced how it looks.

Do you pronounce Willy, Willa? I think Willy sounds like Willee. Put a S on the end of it. Plural. Willees! Local slang changes things. Missouri for instance. Is it Missoureee, or like locals say Missoura. Lousiana sounds like lew we z anna. Or is it Lose e anna? Now names. My name is Trumpe. Is it Trump, or Trumpee. Yep, I'm not related to Donald Trump. So, we end this discussion in a thought that Willys is a name that the owner pronounced Willis. His employees called him both Willees and Willis unless corrected by him. I hate to say this: They both are correct. There is no winning side, pronounce it the way you want. I will say that it's been fun Jousting with you! Yankee or Reb, it makes no difference. Jeep Disease will continue. ( Moose, you are on my side! ) John

My wife calls our cj2a the "will-ease." She thinks "will-is" sounds too pretentious and gets me funny looks at the car parts counter. She knows it is *probably* not how Mr. Willys pronounced his name, but thinks that time changes the way things are interpreted and willys sounds more fun and let's face it; Jeeps are fun.
On the other hand, she also calls our cj2a "Bruce Willis." yippee-ki-yay.

Here you go... HOME → NEWS→ LOCAL Print Story Published: Saturday, 2/2/2002 J.N. Willys pronounced his name `Willis,' local Jeep historian says Share6 Tweet0 0 Reddit0 0 Email0 John North Willys showed off a Whippet, one of his firm's brands, outside the administration building in 1927. John North Willys showed off a Whippet, one of his firm's brands, outside the administration building in 1927. BLADE VIA NEWS BEE Enlarge More than 90 years after John North Willys came to Toledo, there is confusion about how to pronounce his name. “I talked to many people, now deceased, including his private secretary, and all said emphatically that he pronounced it `Willis,' said Ron Szymanski, local Jeep historian. “I can attest to the fact that Willys' relatives all say `Willis.'” However, Mr. Szymanski acknowledged that many Jeep workers pronounce the name “Willies.” The Internet has numerous references to both pronunciations, and even a web site devoted to the controversy. Adding to the confusion is that millions of GIs saw World War II Jeeps stamped WILLYS, and they came home with their own opinions as to the pronunciation. In 1952, as Willys-Overland Motors was preparing for the 50th anniversary of the first Overland cars, The Blade declared: “It's `Willis.'” A number of reporters and editors at the time had known Mr. Willys personally. The current owner of the famed Willys automotive nameplate, DaimlerChrysler, is no help - even though the automaker may put the Willys name on some future versions of the Jeep. “When we came out with the Willys [concept vehicle], we pronounced it `Willis,' like Bruce,” said Sjoerd Dijkstra, a Chrysler spokesman. “We got a lot of flak, so we changed it to [sound like] `Willies,' even though John North Willys probably did pronounce it `Willis.' We use `Willies' now, the common way, so we don't have to explain how [the auto pioneer] pronounced it.” John Conde, an auto historian in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. (and former Jeep public relation executive), said Mr. Willys “was probably the type who would say, `I don't care how you pronounce it as long as you buy my cars.'” - HOMER BRICKEY Read more at www.toledoblade.com/local/2002/02/03/J-N-Willys-pronounced-his-name-Willis-local-Jeep-historian-says.html#i60GDZ2FCj1o9H7L.99

How many ways can you jack up the name Henry Ford? Oh, that's right, you can't do anything but pronounce it right.
