I bought one in a grab box at a auction for 18 bucks, thought I was the winner until now! They are amazing little jacks which get used all the time. I used one up inside my rear quarters to push out the caved in area on my M38. Way better than a porta power and very handy. No hoses and just the right length. The square base is civilian, and the rectangular is WW2. Did they carry them rectangular into the '45 and '46 Cj2's? I'll offer you 6 bucks so you can make a profit! ;D John

OK, what's it for originally. with the weird top and square base? There are a lot of variations on the spun steel jack out there but nobody knows what is for what except the WWII jack.

I am a Jeep jack beginner , and know little of them, I have been told by a real Jeep policeman that the early M151 also used this type of jack, he had a carton of them he purchased at an auction at Fort McCoy Wi., the part# on the jacks were in the 151 parts manual. The rectangular base one I have came to me in the tool box of an early CJ5, why it did not fall through the rust holes in the bottom I do not know, LOL. Lee

To add to this topic, I've seen taller jacks of the same design that used a flat bar instead of a round bar or lug nut wrench to wratchet them. I think these were WW2 chevy or dodge truck jacks. The top pad is different between them and I have not figured that difference out. Some are round and cup shaped while others are flat and bent like yours in the picture. I carry and use mine. They are the best little fool proof jacks I've ever used. I buy them whenever they show up. I'm all jacked up about them! ;D John

There is only one style that is correct for the WWII jeep but all the others have parts you can use to build a WWII correct appearing jack. I believe the rectangular base and an oval stamped cup, with a round hole for the ratchet mechanism is considered right.
But if they are cheap enough they are worth picking up to use as a ......JACK. I had one under my bathtub positioning it during a remodel. Those old cast iron tubs are HEAVY.

Ok...in honor of you, Haines, Mr. Former VP....I've got a few of these jacks stashed in my garage. Like everyone else, when I find them cheap, I can't pass on them regardless if they have a square or rectangular base.
I've got more squares than rectangles...but I can't let go of my squares just yet. Did any of you guys see the thread on G503 with pictures of JBizal's found GPW toolkit? Lee, have you see it in person?
Anyways, it was relatively found intact and had a square base. That's not to say it wasn't added by the farmer after the war, but it isn't proof enough for me to part with my jacks...yet!
I also had a rectangular based, taller jack with the round handle opening. What was odd with it was that the top portion wasn't cupped or flat....it was round with two parallel raised edges on it. It looked like a railroad track on it. I couldn't ever figure out that vehicle and I sold it on eBay for $25. Now....if it belongs to a WC, please don't tell me!
I'll think about a picture posting later.
Bo!
