Can someone tell me what the difference is in this terminology? I'm confused.

Tim, I have not studied the issue and can offer little knowledge on it. Hainses engine, fits the profile of the "Buy Back", weather it is or not, I cannot prove, but it has a casting #638632, this casting was also used on late war blocks as well as early 2A's. I have personally inspected his block and will confirm the pad behind the oil filter area has been machined or ground or flycut smooth. The question is, "Was there numbers there before"?, who knows!. All the blocks were machined flat in this area (#638632) as well as the first series of #641087 c/n blocks. Your GPW block is interesting, and I would agree it was a replacement engine, and IMHO was a wartime replacement, as the s/n stamped on it predates the machining date by a year or two. I would think after the war, know one would care if the chassis number was stamped on the block. Take it or leave it!, my opinion, Lee

I don't know if I would actually call it a buy back. I would rather say it was an engine that was built for an MB and wound up in a very early CJ2A.
That would make sense to me. I have argued with some of the best of them on them on this subject.
I don't think anyone really has the actual answer and anyone that does we can't ask.
