Don't normally do this, but I figured you kids would be appreciative. If anyone feels it needs to be moved, or deleted, haul away. This 17 December is the 70th anniversary of the "Malmedy Massacre" during the "Battle of the Bulge". I've found a most excellent book about this event By Danny S. Parker, "Fatal Crossroads, The Untold Story of the Malmedy Massacre at the Battle of the Bulge", ISBN978-0-306-81193-7. Copyrighted in 2012 this book is a marvelous account of the events leading up to that day , the event, and the aftermath including numerous first hand accounts by participants on both sides and civilians. It has numerous photos and most excellent maps, which is always a sticking point with me. You could do worse than having this in your library. A bit of a teaser: the event didn't happen in Malmedy! The location is much the same today as it was 70 years ago although the location of the bulk of the prisoners murdered is now someones front yard. You can go to this web site,http://mapper.acme.com/, copy and paste this latitude and longitude ( N 50 24' 10" E 6 3' 57" )in the "Find" field at the lower right and plop down where the event happened.
I recommend this book highly!
Best, JB

The Malmady Massacre had a galvanizing effect for the US Forces when they needed it the most. This episode was something that happened on both sides during the war. The Allies won it so history was written accordingly. War is HELL, period.
Who wanted to let the enemy go so they could rejoin their comrades and fight you again. Especially if you had no way of containing them.
Something along these same lines is actually pertained to in Band of Brothers of a certain LT. in HG's avatar.
This particular event by the Germans at this time in the war hurt them in ways that would totally galvanize the allies against them.

Currently I am reading a book I was bequeathed from my Father who was Hitler Youth in WWII. It had notes in the back of things my Father never told me. It is about the Germans last stand at the end of the war. "Battle For The Ruhr."
We must read the stories written by those who lived the war to truly understand it as opposed to the stories by those who just wrote about collected events. The truth lies in the living survivors.
