Ok, guys...What is our checklist when attempting the first start after a rebuild? Besides the actual engine, all of the other componets are in working order...they will be the same things that were already in the jeep with the tired engine.
I'm thinking oil and pressure are priorities. Right now, the oil pump is packed with vasoline, hopefully ready to go. What else?
I'm not ready to attempt this feat today, but hopefully sometime this week.

You put the oil pump in a can of oil, submerge it, turn it to expel air and install. Then take a hand pump oil can and back feed from the upper hose on the oil filter inlet, or where the oil pressure gauge hose attaches at the rear of the block. This primes the system. Then attach oil pressure gauge and spin engine with starter with the spark plugs removed until you read oil pressure. Prime the carb and if you have it all timed right, it should fire immediately and have oil pressure. Hopefully your thermostat has the hole in it so it isn't air locked which will keep it from overheating right away. After you warm it up to operating temp, re-torque the head. Do it before going for a drive. Some say let it totally cool before retorqueing. I don't, I do it at operating temp and have never had a problem. Besides, I can't wait to go test drive it. No patience------LOL, Oilly

Thanks, Oily. I knew you'd know. I didn't think about backfilling the oil line. ...and don't tell lee, but I'd already forgotten about the hole in the thermostat...even though I just did it a few months ago on my buddy's jeep!

A video would be a bold move, indeed: success or failure!

No harm , no foul....the thermostat was still sitting on the bench when I made my comment and Oily replied! Hole has been drilled and thermostat is now nestled in its cozy little house.
It'll get started, don't you fret.
Pork chop, pork chop!

Don't worry, Eric...she didn't blow up! She didn't start, either. Grrrrrrrr. I don't know why I have such a difficult time timing these SOBs. I'll try it again tomorrow.

You, sir, are correct! If I don't get it sorted, I'm sending this b!tch to Gary, then once he gets it sorted, he can send it to Oily to break it in and then we'll send it to you!

Wouldn't that be something if it showed up in my driveway! And I am perfectly capable of thrashing, er, breaking in an engine too.

Not sure where I should post this since I have about umpteen different threads going with this jeep, but...
...SHE ROARED TO LIFE TONIGHT!!!!! I drove around the block half a dozen times smiling from ear to ear and even made a phone call to TX. Gary says he didn't do anything...don't believe him.
Oily...oil pressure was around 50 lbs!
Zookie...she didn't blow up.
Hillbilly...if you still lurk here...nothing caught on fire. ;-).
Temp stayed at 170.
Everything went well...at idle, I reduced it to no choke and zero throttle. She purred strongly.
I switched out the PCV valve with an old takeout one from my GPW. The other one had no guts. Hmmmmm. I'm sure that had nothing to do with it. I told Gary that I didn't know what the difference was from this morning. I remember now...
...I turned on my '40s tunes tonight.
To quote one of my closest friends around here..."HOT DAMN!"
PS..l gotta get cleaned up and go eat. I'll try to post my videos later.
