Second gear grinds when I down shift no matter how much I slow it down first. But...it never ever grinds on the up shift, ever. So...what might it be?

Just a WAG, clutch or pilot bushing might be dragging. When you up shift, the friction of the syncros slows the front half of the transmission and the clutch down to match the back half, so to speak. When you downshift, it has to speed up the clutch disc and transmission internals, a lot tougher job. Mine grinds on the downshift too, sometimes. When I downshift, I don't let the engine slow all the way down to idle, that helps a lot.

Bushing was good checked that well before I put it back together. I guess I will have to work with rpms a little and find that sweet spot. Maybe when the springs and those three little rectangle pieces finally wear in and loosen up some it will get better.

Of course, most of my issues just stem from a worn transmission,
