Correct me if I am wrong, but there should be no power at the BAT terminal on the voltage regulator when the ign is off, correct? I have voltage and the battery drains overnight. I am thinking I have a connection on the ign switch wrong. The ameter wouldn't be the problem as I have tried 3.

Wrong!, the battery terminal is hot all the time. the wire from the bat. terminal goes to the ammeter that is hot all the time as well, then goes from the ammeter to the battery side of the starter switch.. If you have a voltage drain, take the bat. wire off the regulator (engine off) and see if it has a small arc as you touch it to the bat terminal on the regulator. I would assume your regulator may be at fault. Lee

Remove cover and see if the cut-out relay contacts are stuck. If that was the case, your battery current is backfeeeding through the generator. The cut out contacts are the biggest ones, since they are the only set that carry the full current of gen. output. The rest just make and break field current. If they are stuck, just be careful the contact points dont get bent while trying to seperate them.
Cut-out operation: Engine off or idle: contacts open.
Start engine and speed up: contacts should close at a fairly fast idle.

Unfortunately none of them are doing that. I tried everything and think it just needs replaced.

Just wondering..... Is it a new regulator or a old one?

It was a relatively new one that came with a generator I got off the CJ2A form.

I'm an amateur, by all means, and most of you know it, but...
...could the generator be at fault? Could the drain occur if it's wired backwords or if there is an internal short in the genny?

Generator checked out okay. Went to a salvage yard looking for a used regulator. After much looking only found two and they were shot. On the way back home stopped by a repair shop and he said to look on the ole 51 Chevy one ton. Sure enough there was one. Rusty on the outside. Pulled the cover and like new. $15
Put it on the jeep and polarized it and started it up.
It drew down on the amp gauge upon fire up and lights one and then the amp gauge moved from negative to charge. Charges about 7.4 as the manual says.
It never did this with the old regulator.

Sounds like the original regulator was never working correctly. The current dance on your amp gauge is how mine reacts. The needle will eventually drop back to zero once the battery has a full charge. This is a good thing. It will start to dance again when I'm running with head lamps or heater.

Just one more comment...
Don't you just love the simplicity of these old Jeeps? Temp, Speed, Fuel Level, Oil Pressure, Electrical Condition...Everything you need, and nothing more. Love It!!
