To Adjust the valves in your Go Devil, do as follows: My methods of mechanics have been refered to as "Rogue Methods". ( 2A page) LOl They are!!!! Ok , Get a steel folding chair, light, and a cold beer out. Disconnect the battery. Take off the left front fender. Then remove the side chest valve cover. Pull all spark plugs and lay the wires out so you don't reverse them. You will now use the Magic 9 method. You have 8 valves in there you will adjust with two 1/2 inch wrenches. A feeler gauge set to .016. ( Have a slug of cold beer) If you have long hair, wear a stocking cap so it doesn't get caught in anything. I'm safe, don't have hair anymore! Now, rotate the engine in the direction it runs. Clockwise looking at the front of the motor. You can push in on the fan belt and turn it with your fan blade, or find a big socket and turn the crank there. Make sure it's out of gear, chocked or the park brake set. You will watch the valves go up and down while turning the engine. They are numbered one through eight in your mind, going front to back. So, using the formula, 9 minus whatever valve is raised to it's highest point and not going up or down, you adjust the solution to the formula. Examples: 9 minus #2 fully raised, adjust 7. 9 minus # 1 fully raised, adjust #8. And so on. Write down the ones you have adjusted on a piece of paper or your hand in permanent ink. ! When done, you should have finished one beer and are well into the 2nd. A little tip I learned is to take your new side cover gasket and glue one side of it to the cover with gasket cement of your liking. I don't use silicone. It expands and goes crazy around gas and such. It also can get loose in your engine and plug up oil feed, bye bye engine. After the cement sets up, I grease the other side of the gasket. You actually can remove it and reuse it next time and save enough money to buy a 30 pack of Hamms that way. See how valuable this info. can be? The magic 9 method works on all in line 4's. The magic 13 method works on all in line 6 cylinder engines. It doesn't work on v6's or V8's. If you have a Buick straight 8, it would be the magic 17!!!!!!! Always wanted to play with one of those, but you need binoculars to see to the other end of it. Oh, almost forgot------wear 2 power glasses so you can see what you are doing. Goes along with no hair! You might want to chase the fender threads with a tap and use antiseize compound on them so next time, it all falls apart for you. Antiseize is your friend! Standard equipment. Signed Valve Leaker

Ok, IMO (Bo says I am not humble) I picked out a few discrepancies in the administration of the " Rogue" magic 9. 1) Right off the bat, you broke the rules , where was your folding chair and the fresh beer ?. To top it off, God or fate tried to remind you of this with your note pad ( said right on the top, "It's important to keep hydrated"). But your focus did not allow you to see what was right before your eyes . 2) You specifically said to turn the engine from the FRONT, then proceeded to turn it from the back!, WTH, I am confused .................... Well done! , just kidding , A true to life A/V manual. Lee

And yes I did turn it from the back. EXXXXXCCCCCUUUUUSSSSEEEE MMMMEEEEEEEEEE! Like Steve Martin! Fact of the matter is, its done, and I am happy! I am not editing the video either...How do you like those apples?

Great video. I like the idea of leaving the feeler gauge in place while making the adjustment. I'll try it that way next time. Scott I'm curious - did you check them all again after the initial adjustments? I usually go through at least twice, sometimes more, as there are almost always a couple that need further adjustment. I'm not sure if that's due to me not having them exactly bottomed out the first time or if they actually move or what but I inevitably have to make some follow-up tweaks. And John, I'm pretty sure your "Rogue Method" accuser is right here on this forum. Given the way I crash around in the garage, take it as a compliment

Sir Ryan, Thanks, and yes. Second check. I will probably do a third before I button the engine up, Something neat, when I removed the tappets originally. I tagged and bagged them. Numbering front to back their location in the block. When I took them apart to clean them, I measured the position of the adjusting bolt length and tried to put it back close to what it was. Only two required More than a quarter of a turn or so. Some only like a sixth. Point being.....not really sure. Just thought I would share that.

Very nice! You rotated the engine in reverse, not the way it runs. Still should be fine. On a new engine, you will find that the valves "seat" themselves by running a while, temperature will also change things. So, in short, the reason you greased one side of the cover is that you'll need to go back and re check your clearances. I've actually had a engine run perfect, and the next time I go for a run, it won't idle anymore. . WTH! Well after reading the manual 100 times, checking all, I read one of the reasons it won't idle is: too tight a valve clearance. Yep, it changed. That ice hole! The benefit of this problem is: you get to down a couple of cold ones while sitting on your folding chair again. And Ryan, "Rogue Methods" do have benefits! Oh, almost forgot to tell you guys Tiny and Bruce W. were here. They had some HBR's . Oilly

I went back and watched, and yes I did. Also Lee heard me say front ! I will reshoot that portion, and edit. I read your post twice before I did this, and had front and clockwise in my head!! First time doing this you know.
Love the input! Will make for a more accurate vid. Can't have folks misinformed....

No offense was intended in my comments . After all, when the video goes viral , you will look back to this post (if you remember it) and think " Thank god those picky ice hole bastages" corrected me or I would look like a dumbfu&@ on the WWW . You would not want that..........would you!. Lee

A little trick that works for me,,,, When I get to that last, little, picky, fine-tuning part of the adjustment, I position the two wrenches on the tappet body and adjusting screw so that they are slightly apart, and so that the adjuster can be turned in the proper direction by squeezing the two wrenches with one hand, like the handles of a pair of pliers. I find it easier to make tiny adjustments this way, and the feeler gauge can be held in the other hand so I can check the clearance as I'm making the adjustment. BW

I still find myself randomly chuckling out loud over that NOS Parts video. The Haines Video Production Company had better not have released its final feature.

I don't like chasing the right number.

It wasn't my intention to knock you out of an academy award for best movie, but tell leaker he didn't say anything in his NEW instructions about making sure the engine starts out on TOP DEAD CENTER.
