So on the 5th I motored south to friend Wally P's place for a Jeep run (2nd annual). I stopped for gas 60 miles out and as I pulled out of the gas station the 2A quit , It restarted but would not run up past 45 mph. I decided to travel light and took my small tool box and my spare pump was in the bigger tool box at home (Murphy's law). Anyway I motored on and as long as I did not push it the Jeep was ok, I did go to an Oreille's and pick up an electric pump just in case. I did complete the trip (210 miles) without installing the electric pump. Now the pump is 6 yo, glass bowl repop with 4000 miles on it. I will assume the check valve spring (S) are bad or the valves themselves are floating at higher rpm. I will tear this one down for inspection. Anyone else have pump troubles? Lee

I'm not sure, but I may be having a similar issue. When climbing a long hill, I am hard on the throttle. Occasionally, the Willys sputters a bit, so I let off the throttle. It immediately recovers, and then acts just fine. I keep threatening to troubleshoot the fuel system, but life is full of other challenges right now.
It acts like the fuel pump isn't able to keep up with the demand. This pump is a reproduction CJ5 dual action pump.

Hmmmmm....this reminds me that I canobolized my fuel pump repair kit last year for the Rustbucket jeep's pump. Who sells the best repair kits these days? Or better yet, who has them in stock?

I got a fuel pump from a G503 member at the D-Day Memorial on June 6th of this year. It is a repo. After 300 miles the primer does not work and it leaks oil out of the primer lever pivot constantly. Still pumps fuel fine but...

I think since the beginning of time, the MB/GPW repro pumps have always been know to leak through the lever pivot. As for the lever no longer priming, my does that...but only on occasion. I think it stops priming once I have fuel into the carb. I do have an original pump sitting on my shelf, but it's in need of a rebuild. I need to find a kit, rebuild it, and then keep it in the jeep, I guess.

I ordered TWO new glass bowl repops from Walcks yesterday. I want a fresh spare for Colorado , and will have an electric backup as well......... I will tear the current one down and report on my findings as I suspect weak check valve springs (thank you Chi-Com repop wizards). Zookie, the MB/GPW repops are well known for the same problems you face (leaking primer arm). Moose55, Midwest military will rebuild your oe pump with ethanol resistant parts, also Then and Now will do it as well. HG, upon my findings upon teardown a report will follow in the CRAP parts section if it is indeed crap Lee

Did you see lots of air bubbles in the glass bowl? Also, was the bowl tight against the gasket? Oil

Paul, I will keep you in mind. I talked to a classic car guy today, (mustangs, Camaro's, ect) he said most current production pumps are crap and not a Jeep specific issue!. I will do some testing before I remove the pump , I will tee in a fuel pressure gage between the pump and carb and go for a ride and se whats happening . Lee

Haha! HG just wants free sh!t and gets his leiderhosen all wadded up when he sees someone else getting a gift!!
Lee...I've had no problem rebuilding the fuel pumps in the past. I just need a darn kit. I'm not too keen on having to pay shipping twice along with paying for labor and parts. Sounds like there aren't any suitable rebuild kits out there.
I've been using supposed ethanol-free gas in my MVs for the last few years without any fuel componet issues. However, my lawnmower and weed eater get fed the cheap stuff, and, well...those guys have issues!

Air bubbles that show up in the glass bulb are caused by the sucking action of the pump itself. Most pumps have two one way check valves that open and close as the pump diaphram is moved up and down by the arm that rides the eccentic lobe on your camshaft. If you have a leak in the fuel line going back to the tank, it will show up as lots of air bubbles rising in the gas inside the glass bulb. A loose bulb letting air in at the gasket, bad cracked gasket, loose line fitting, hole in the line, hole inside the tank in the pickup tube, or even a slightly obstructed outlet in the tank will cause this. You can usually get going again by back blowing the line to the tank to clear the obstuction. I've run out of gas and towed the Jeep home only to find a loose bowl against the gasket. Can be quite irritating as Lee the Willleeese owner knows! Our wonderful alcohol E 85 corn crap garbage gas is a big cause of fuel pump and fuel system failures. I've pulled brand new systems back out of the Jeep due to this crap. I now ONLY buy non alcohol premium and will go out of my way and spend dollars per gallon more to get it. I'm considering draining the entire system for over winter storage because of this. I will if it gets worse. Luckily my climate allows me to do this without condensation. A shop at a steady 50 degrees helps too. I'm waiting for Lee's report. It's because of Lee I boxed up a fuel pump and water pump to take to Colorado. Thanks for the idea Lee! Oil
