I thought my A1 was ready for spring------------WRONG! I let a buddy drive it last June. He was a good guy and filled the A1 up with gas when we were done. Unfortunately he filled it with that E85 crap and didn't tell me. OMG!!!!!!!! The A1 started and died. Would not pop after that. Pulled the gas cap off and ----Holy buckets of bad stuff! Stink, smelled like vinegar. My brand new brass filter screen was eaten in half with this blue crap in chunks at the bottom of the filler. The whole inside of my NOS tank was lined with soft rust goo crap. Well, I drained it out and smelled up a city block. (I have some weeds in mind). Scrubbed and cleaned and blew out the filter pickup, sending unit, and then hot pressure washed it out. Turbulator tip was a big help. Then a couple of chains all over inside, scotchbrite, and some pleasant words all helped to clean it out. I got to it in time. Next I replaced the in line filter just ahead of the fuel pump. Boy am I glad I put that there. The pump and carb were still fine. Fresh premium non alcohol gas, a new screen, and wallah, my A1 is back. The lesson here is one I learned a long time ago. Never buy anything but non alcohol premium in a old vehicle. It will store here in my climate for 2 full years and be fine. That other crap is bad for anything except ragweed, rabbit rubber brush, golden rod, burdock, cockle burrs, ticks, gum weed, Canadian thistle, mullen, and any other bad weed. Haines, got any bad weed? ? John

Well....there's that old saying....No good deed goes unpunished!!! Glad you got it running again!!
If it was my kin folks (inlaws), it never would've happened....because the gas tank would've been empty!!! Lol!!

What I really want to know is: when are we going to tell the EPA and Gov't we have had enough of their wisdom. I'm already back up and running, but if they keep forbidding the use of real gasoline, aircraft will soon fall out of the sky because e 85 ate the thing in half. Who is going to regulate that! Fire all of them and elect jeep guys to office! John

I hear ya, oilleaker! I've read a bunch about the E85 and even the stuff that contains "up to 10%" in regular unleaded gasoline. I haven't had any catastrophes, yet, although I am suspicious of my lawnmower. With the jeeps and WC, I put ethanol free gas in them. There are only a few stations around town that offer it and then it is only in the 93 octane variety. Oh, well...I gladly pay a few more dollars at the pump for ease of mind. Its not like I go through a tank of gas in a week.
Glad you were able to fix everything. Stinks though.
