When I got "Herm" my '51 M38, I noticed after pulling off the body that there was a sleeve of hand formed galvanized sheet metal wrapped around the outer steering column base where it fits the Ross box. Humm, Bubba has been here. Stripped the column unit apart to clean/paint/rebuild, and found nothing wrong with the outer tube. Looking in Kaiser Willys catalog, I found that a correct inner worm and tube shaft is supposed to be 42 inches. This one was 44 inches. I measured a 2A, 3A, M38A1, and found it matched: ---------------a Willys pickup. I examined the casting numbers and it had a horn switch screwed into the base. The box is indeed a M38. All is correct except some crafty devil figured out the pickup tube would fit and work with "Special" modification. More money spent, it's back in shape. It then dawned on me that if your belly won't fit between the wheel and seat this would be a way to get two more inches!!!!!!! John
