I am finishing up my M38 T-90 rebuild and it's time to put the shift tower back on....except one of the rails is stuck. It will rotate but will not slide back and forth like it should. I'm afraid to succumb to my urge to wail on the thing with a 16 lb hammer. The shift tower and tranny were functional before I started meddling with it. Can someone tell me how to unstick this thing?? I'd like to change the springs and poppet balls too if possible. The spring and ball on the other rail already flew out. Are they somehow jammed up on the stuck side?

No envelope yet Haines. Probably tomorrow?
If the shaft did over-travel how do I get the ball out? If I unscrew that threaded plug at the front of the shaft tube can I get at it from there? I would have tried that already if I could find the right sized square tool to unscrew the plug with. Am I missing an obviously simple solution? Really afraid of breaking something.

When I did my transmission, I had a similar problem. I did remove the caps, bolts you are speaking of. I fought with that joker for hours. If you are patient, and take your time, it will all come apart, I wire wheeled all parts, bought new poppets from Walcks, and put it back together. Wish I lived closer...We could have a few beers, and straighten it out...one way or the other.....

I have new poppets and springs ready to go. I figured I'd slap 'em in tonight and the transmission would be complete. Looks like this tower will take a little more effort. Haines, did you remove the shift forks on yours? If so, what did you use to replace the pins that secure them to the shaft?
Fridge'll be full of cold brews tomorrow. Stop over any time!

I removed the pins on the forks with a pair of needle nosed pliers, I pinched the mushroom end in , and tapped it out with a drift, I was actually able to save them...NO BS, Put them back in, and waffled them out with a larger drift,,,If you get my Drift!!! Maybe someday on the Pilsner my friend...You ought to be awful cold right now! Maybe you should visit Charleston!

Good call on removing the pins so they can (hopefully) be re-used. I did that and was able to drive the shaft out with a brass drift after removing all the plugs.

That is FANTASTIC! Glad I could help. Remember I am no Guru. Fighting through just like you. It makes me happy when I see success stories. Still no Gaskets?..
