Hello all...
I was just skimming through HG's front axle rebuild and it inspired me to finish disassembling the postwar front axle that I have sitting in my garage. I removed the ring, pinion and spider gears. On first look, all of the gears look good.
How do I ID it though? How do I know if I have gears for a Dana 23, 25, 27 or something else?
I need to know if it will interchange with the wartime jeeps in my garage or not. If not, I'd just assume sell it something...but I need to know what I have, first!
Sooooooo....how do I do that??
Bo!

Ooooohhhhh good one..this would be good for a Fantastic conversation. I have seen actual dates stamped on my parts. This would be another good one for our data bank.

So for giggles, I went out and started snooping around for numbers and such. Here is what I have found thus far: Marking stamped on the ring gear: SPICER 17483 43 8 C K 60 2 13 48P (I think it is and 8P) Markings stamped on the pinion gear: SPICER 17482 43 8 C J C 4 14 XXX (cant decipher...feel like I am looking through old man Haines eyes!) and scribed/etched by hand at the end where the teeth are: 501 D+60 Coincidentally the ring gear has 43 teeth and the pinion has 8 I went to the kasierwilly.com sight and took a gander at their ring and pinions...here is how they describe them: www.kaiserwillys.com/category/willys-jeep-front-axle-ring-pinion-parts-accessoriesSo, if their info is correct, this ring and pinion would not fit an MB/GPW. But should fit a '46-'49 CJ I've got one from a rear axle sitting in a box in the garage...I'll go take a gander at that one tomorrow. I remember the pinion being rough on that one, though, so it is mostly paper weight material. From what I can tell...the spider gears seem to be interchangeable through several models of jeeps. Can anyone confirm or deny that one?

Moose, if it is post war the gearset will not match, a WW2 Jeep has a ratio of 4.88-1, A CJ (2A,3A ect) is 5.38-1, axels will fit, as well as other parts. Lee

43 devided by 8 = 5.375 or 5.38-1 Lee
