To tall for a jeep jack, plus I think somebody said before that the base should be rectangular. MHO

BoJo, I think you may be right, but I'm a bit fuzzy too. I think the rule of thumb is to look for this style jack with a rectangle base vs. the square base. Beyond that, I haven't a clue. Tim IT BETTER BE THE F"IN SQUARE BASE, OR ME AND THE MOOSE ARE GOING FOR ANOTHER ROUND!!!! By the way, go back to the top of this thread, and read the whole thing. There is a very funny story, and video! Chill out doofus. The square base jack that you have is a jeep jack, albeit probably postwar. I say probably because a few years ago the supposed unmolested Bizal GPW tool kit was discovered. Within it was a square based jack which put all of the G503ers into a massive tool debate that hasn't been settled, yet. The general consensus is a rectangular base with the round, deep cup is WW2. Rectangular base with shallow cup is maybe WW2. The square base is unknown, but they lean towards postwar, even though it was the jack in the toolkit. Nobody can find documented proof that Ford was handing out the squares. ...at least this is how I interpret all of the debates over there. As for Survey's jack...I can't find the thread where it was mentioned. Google has a few in "images".

Jack linkThis might be the jack thread that I was thinking of. It is close...very close...but not quite Survey's jack.

The way I understand it, the rectangular base is WW2 and the square base is CJ. I have seen early 45-46 CJ with the rectangular base which were supposed to be original with the Jeep. The taller jacks were for the trucks. Red Ball Express. I am impressed with those jacks. They work quite well. I found that they fit up inside Jeeps rear quarters and with wood will push out the dented in area while you work out the high spots doing body work. Multiple use tool! M38's had the stamped cheap looking screw jacks with the folding rod handle. Those little ratchet screw jacks are ingenious! Oil

I'm supposed to have a correct jack that came with the new CJ6 that I bought back in "68". It is one of the reasons that I started the great "purge" last fall! Too much "stuff"!! Gettin so as I can't find my a-- with a hand rake, if you know what I mean!! When I was a young wiper like OIL, I could even remember my middle name!! LOL

OK, back to Jacks! The jack that was with my '49 jeep pickup has the thick square top, not a cup, round crank hole, and a rectangular base. Other than that it is the same as all my square based CJ style jacks except the WW2 rectangular base. I tried it out on my CJ2A and it worked, but seemed a little harder to crank up on. So, I grabbed another of the 5 I have and I noticed a difference. It has finer screw threads. The larger screw base that goes up into the center portion of the jack also threads into a necked down area that has no ring welded to the center part of the jack. ALL the other jacks I have are coarse thread , the same as the '49 pickup jack. All the other ones also have the welded on ring where the screw enters the center portion. Only the finer threaded jack tube simply necks down. It also works slower, but easier. I'm captivated by these little jacks. They work so good and are so handy. Now to add to the puzzle, my brother in law next door has the same small jack, but it has a flat bar crank handle. Is there a place or name to go and research these jacks? G 503 doesn't seem to have this info. Oil

Oily...it wasn't that long ago I saw a discussion on G503 about the jacks that were fitted with the flat bar. Me being me, I quickly became confused when they started spouting out various part numbers, schematic references and dates, but their consensus was leading towards the flat bar variety, with the rectangular WW2 base characteristics belonging to MAs. Evidently some old TMs or similar manuals and cars utilized the flat bar in 1941 and before. I'll see if I can't find that thread again. G503 jack link

Thanks Moosey! Just got back from a long Google search. You are correct! I need to tell my brother in law he has the wrong crappy jack and I'll just trade him a CJ square base for that "junk" Willys MA jack he has------- LOL, no, but I'm telling him to take care of it. It's the real deal. His dad had it from somewhere in the past. His dad was a B24 pilot that bombed Iwo Jima!!! I've seen his leather flight jacket that is covered with red bombs on the back for each mission. Anyway, as F. Bill said, the jacks are made by Spun Steel. Lots of variety and I can't find a reference that shows the types , models, part numbers etc. from Spun steel. If we find that, we could answer alot of questions. I have what's called excessive compulsive disorder. I want all those jacks I come accross. Two in each jeep is good right? Lee, remind me during the Black Hills meet, to show you that flight jacket. Simply awesome. Family airloom. I'm honored to even see it. Wow! Oil

Who can a brother buy a jack off!? /muahahhahhahaahaha I'd try Asking Bob first. Bob, look seriously I mean I am married and all, but for a JEEP JACK .... I'm out if you're thinking I'd trade a five-knuckle shuffle or some slap and tickle action, but let's see if we can make a deal if you have a surplus. I mean, would Moosey lead me astray?

C'mon, Bob. I'm sure you've stuck a jack away somewhere and have forgotten about it.
And HG...as for your hurtful words, how different is my small jack inventory different from you guys hoarding lunettes? And you (HG) don't even have a trailer!
Now, let's not even think of the jack master in the bad hills that has the real collection of loose screw jacks.

Hummmmmm. Jack Master. Black Hole of the Hills. You guys can go find your own Jacks. In other words-------Jack Off. I hate to cry, but my Jacks have homes in my toolboxes of my Jeeps. I'm lazy and don't like to try and remember to switch all the stuff, everytime I head out on the trail. So, don't jack me up about my Jeep jacks you bunch of rusty lug nuts! I'm just flat tire ironed of hearing about this! I guess I'll have to jack up my parts tub that's sitting on a pile of old crappy lunettes to keep it off the ground. Oil

Thank goodness I'm the only one hanging out in the golf shop on this rainy Sunday morning...Oily's post just had me in stitches!!!!
I guess its been awhile since we dished it out to him, because he was pretty darn fast on the draw.
Crappy lunettes my butt!
Hey...so your words just got in my head...so what if I've got 3 jacks! I have at least 3 jeeps stashed in my bushes and one in the garage. I guess I'm looking for another jack!! And I need a decent one for the WC. I gave Haines a perfectly good one (or more like he stole it) and I got a busticated up, unusable jack for the WC. Bastage.

Ahem. Still in need of a jeep jack. Love the muckrakin' - did some search and dug up this ol thread. Moosey talked once about going up the Mecca of Swap Meets in Charlotte NC - when is that (or was) because we should go. Maybe along with a jack I can find that stinking worm gear for my speedo
