Which way towards transmission?
The one I received looks a bit different than the old one. I always question when I install one, yet I can never remember the answer.
One side looks to be two parts, the reverse side one part.
I THINK the 2 part side faces the transmission.
Thoughts?

It sounds like you are describing it backwards. I believe the "2 part" side goes towards the clutch. Here's a pic of mine after a test drive with it installed backwards...notice the smoke.....not good.

Um, yeah...have I mentioned how much I despise loading pics onto another site so I can copy and past the url over here... This is the side that I refer to as having two parts to it. This is the side that I refer to as having one part. Lee...please look through the plastic wrap. I'm trying to keep it neat and clean BEFORE she goes into a world of dirt, grime and sludge. ...and Ryan...those pictures are absolutely terrifying. It looks like when you tested it, you didn't have the tub on the jeep. If so, at least it made getting that bearing out a bit easier...but not enjoyable.

I would say the one piece side goes towards the clutch, Keep in mind the fingers on the pressure plate make contact with the bearing and the bearing will have a "Wear face" on one side. On yours the two piece side looks kinda wimpy, and after another look it looks as if the outer piece is rolled over the inner, is it sheet metal?, certainly does not look like a wear surface.........Or the inside bore of the bearing will be fixed to one side of the bearing, right! that would get pressed onto the carrier and go towards the trans., if you installed it backwards the clutch side of the bearing would not turn as in Ryans case. As my old friend Bob has told me many times, "look at the parts closely, they will tell you which way they go" Lee Mail it to me, Then I can give you a sound answer, LOL

Lee...I'm very much agreeing with what you've stated...and I think that is how I've installed these in other jeeps. It is just throwing me for a loop because the one I took out, may have been installed the other way. And as a note, does not sound very good right now. Who knows how long ago it was installed and who did it. I'll look extra closely tomorrow when I take it out of the wrapper. Thanks! Bo

Just keep in mind, once pressed onto the carrier, the face of the bearing (towards clutch) should turn ;D Lee

I responded prior to Lee's last post and then deleted it before I noticed he followed up- sorry about that Lee. Anyways, now I can't tell from my own pics which way the bearing was facing with regards to the "1 piece" or "2 piece". Bo - Is the "2 piece" end the wider one? If so, that should face the clutch and as Lee said the part in contact with the clutch fingers should rotate. For what it's worth, here's my 3A forum post when the problem occurred: www.cj3apage.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1329871866And yes, I did have the tub off when I went through this. I think I pulled the tranny once for this problem and 2 or 3 more times chasing various leaks. Doing the "rolling chassis test drive" was certainly a valuable exercise.

Normally the machined side is ground flat so the clutch plate arms have a nice smooth place to contact. You want the hardest steel there, not sheet metal. The side you are calling the two piece side goes tot he tranny side as you say.
The one you took out that may have been in backwards, was it operating as it should?

I was just looking at the OLD bearing and I definitely see a wear mark on what I would label the very technical term of "the one part side". HAHA.
I'm sure that is how the bearing was originally installed...I just wasn't very observant until AFTER I removed it from the carrier and had a "pucker" moment. For the year that I had the truck, I rarely drove it since it literally did not have any brakes. It was just first and reverse around the driveway...but all worked fine. I'm going with the gang's thoughts on installing it.
Thanks, lads! (and PS...you are all now working on my NON-flat fender project. HAHA!) ...but I'm sure you all knew that anyways!

The transmission is once again mated to the clutch housing!
I really thought getting the spring attached to the carrier would be the hardest part. The second hardest part would be getting the transmission aligned and in...it is just SO big and heavy!
I'll give Dodge this...the manual says to take 2 9/16-12 bolts, cut the heads off and use them as alignment studs through the upper bolt holes into the clutch housing.
That part went swell. It was a little sketchy getting all the splines lined up. I think it's easier to see and adjust them on a jeep!
Perhaps tomorrow I can get all of the other items back in place, adjust the throw out and test it. This had better work!
...if not, keep an eye posted in the for sale section. It's nice to know that one man can remove and install the transmission. I just don't want yo do it again!

I've gotten enough stuff put back together on her that I was able to test the clutch today. She works!!! Drove a half mile, got her up to 3rd gear. Did just fine! Would be better with new tires...if anyone is worried about what to get me for Christmas. Thanks for your help on this one, everyone.
