I don't say this...often...to guys, but Haines, that's a pretty cool tool you've got there. I wish someday I would figure out exactly how to read one of those gadgets.

I wish someday I would figure out exactly how to read one of those gadgets. It's easy, once you get the hang of it - and no batteries to go dead!! BW

Not a slide rule......that's a whole nother deal for your pocket protector to take to math class. Vernier caliper, and yes, easy to read. Of course the digital caliper fro Harbor Fright is way too easy to use so I grab it first anyway.
It is cool that you have some family tools from the past.

I'm pretty sure vernier is one kind and dial is another and digital is a third lee You are correct Sir, The old timers I grew up with would have described them as I have, that's how I learned. 29 years ago I graduated from Tool & Die school, they were all vernier calipers there as well,,,,,,,,,in the end who really cares, all cool and Very usefull. ;D Lee

one person alignment tool:
construction:
Use:
Getting my wife or the neighbor kid to hold the tape measure again and again while setting up the front axle toe just isn't practical. I whipped up an adjustable length stick to help me get my alignment "in the park" (hey "Yellowstone" is a park) while working alone in the cold garage.
Took one of the wife's old brooms that had a metal nut in one end that the broom part screwed into. Replaced the broom part with a handy 3" carriage bolt found on the workbench. (any kinda bolt will do, eh?) Used the tubing cutter to quickly lop off the handle at about 42". On the front wheels, just below the springs to get as far forward as possible on the rim, placed the cut end of the alignment stick on the inside of 1 rim, then unscrewed the carriage bolt until it touches the inside of the other rim.
move the stick to the back of the wheels. There should be a bit of a gap, say 1/16" to show about 1/8" toe in. You are not really 1/2 way forward and back on the wheels so don't set the toe based on your book this way. I reckon about 1/2 of speech since I'm only 1/2 way up the wheel.
Easy to adjust the length of the toe stick by screwing and unscrewing the bolt in the end as you narrow in on your alignment.
Precise? No. Better than eyeballing it and faster than stringing it? Yes.

I found this square drive, many sized wrench in the willys' toolbox last night as I dug through the detritus. Handy for screwing the diff drain plugs back in after you unscrew them on a rock while off pavement. I think it says, KEN TOOL Q14 Attachments:
