While waiting for my frame to get back from the sand blaster, I started to clean up and inspect the axles. Most components look pretty good, except these... Three of the four spider gears have a broken tooth. Very odd. I have a new set on order. This is a Dana 25 with Bendix knuckles and Warn hubs. What could cause this? Tim

Looking great, Tim! As for the cause of the broken teeth on the spider gears...I've seen that before. The rear axle on my '45 had busted teeth like yours. I never found the culprit, though. I just assumed some foreign object wedged itself in there and broke the teeth. Bo

Yes, very odd. I saw the same thing on my Dad's 2A a couple of years ago. His front spider gears where completely destroyed, but nothing else was, and couldnt find what would cause it. I wouldve thought the bendix joints or the pinion gear wouldve broke before anything else.

Sir Hawkridge, Is that a sandblasted axle I am seeing? also the bolts that hold the bearings in the diff, did you take those loose? Are you going to do a complete rebuild of that axle...If so , cool . Thats what I am working on right now! We can do a front axle rebuild thread.

IMO, the spider gears in either a D25 or D27 are by far the weakest component, especially so if you have Spicer axle joints. Check the ring and pinion carefully when you disassemble. Those broken off teeth can do some damage.
I blew the spider gears in my CJ5 D27 just backing it up to turn arround and it wasn't even that steep.

Thanks for chiming in fellas. Parts arrived yesterday. Time to dig in. I was hoping I could replace them without pulling the axle shafts. No Can Do. Looks like the ring gear is in the way of dropping the large pin out. Oh, HG...I did back out the bolts for the bearing caps. I was trying to figure out how to dis-assemble the thing. Tim

Tim, you will need to pull the axels to remove the carrier, mark the caps well before you remove them so you get them back the same, then you should be able to pry the ring gear/carrier from the housing, this is usually not a problem. I would not remove the pinion shaft, lots of important shims in this area and do not like to be disturbed. Good luck with the required repairs. Lee

Kind of bummed. I was hoping for a parts delivery from Walcks today. I don't think it's going to make it for my weekend of Willys fun.
Oh well, more parts cleaning is in order. Rear axle needs to be taken down.
I want to start assembling something...anything!!
Tim
