That is an interesting read...filled with nothing but heresay! Here's a question: if this company had been around for 45 years or so by the time WWII came around, wouldn't those GIs have already known how to pronounce it? It wouldn't have been like that was the first time they saw it stamped on a car, right? I had read something the other night that said they were the #2 automaker in the country (behind Ford!!) during the early part of the 20th century.
And Lee, as for finding us a "live one", I'm on it!
Hey...what nationality is Willys? Find that out and then just ask someone from that country to pronounce it.
At times like this, I sure am glad to be the owner of a Ford jeep.

Well this paragraph is not here say: “When we came out with the Willys [concept vehicle], we pronounced it `Willis,' like Bruce,” said Sjoerd Dijkstra, a Chrysler spokesman. “We got a lot of flak, so we changed it to [sound like] `Willies,' even though John North Willys probably did pronounce it `Willis.' We use `Willies' now, the common way, so we don't have to explain how [the auto pioneer] pronounced it.” ...... which means that the current owners of the name right acknowledge that they now pronounce it "Willies" Willys is an English name. They came to America in 1740 .... Could it be that the Willys family is pronouncing it wrong? ..... What if they changed there name when they came on the boat to escape the Kings persecution. ...... think about it

I'm still laughing about the Hillbillis not going to school at all. He probably didn't have time because he was hawking a deal for marbles, steelies or something like that as a youth. He has a nose for finding Willies stuff like no other. Now with his new shop and business, I'm waiting for the story about how this guy came into my shop with a old wooden crate marked GPW from WW2 and wants to sell it for 500 bucks. I love to talk with you guys and the more the merrier. My youth has me ingrained to say Willies. It just doesn't sound right to me to say Willis. Even if John North Willys said that is how he pronounced it. I've tried to draw out the wrath of Haines and he is holding back, not banning me, and I'm his Knighted brother anyway, so he knows I'm not the enemy. Man did he kill me with "The Fonz". I'm laughing right now. Keep it coming! Signed General Oil Leaker

Hey Scott,
I'm working on a poem and I was hoping you could help me out:
There once was a man from Chile, Who drove down the road in his .......... < insert Willeze or Willis As he started to pass, he ran out of gas and said "Man I sure do feel silly"
If I were going to turn to the dark side of the force, I'd use it in my jeep build. It's quicker and easier lol!

I still think Scott needs to fix the hood, windshield, and tailgate on his 2A to read in steel letters Willis. Not the correct Willys. I would then gladly call his jeep a Willis. Quite simple solution to his problem. What say you Sir Chief cook and bottle washer? Lee, you can build it for him!

I realize the written English language can be pretty F'ed up, but seriously, stretching a "ys" to sound like "iss" is just plain absurd. Yeah, I also second HG to re stamp the name on his jeep.
Between the poem and Diff'rent Strokes, I think a slammed shut case has been made. But, in case there is any remaining doubt, I tried to imitate jpet with a poem as well. It featured a dame named Phyllis who was very promiscuous with the lads. Eventually she got an STD called syphilis. However, I really couldn't get the poem to come together. What would a Willis" have to do with any of this? A few Willys makes a heck of a lot more sense.
