I have a L134 engine that I am rebuilding that is set up with 12 volt system including alternator. The alternator has been in storage several years and has crud in it, dirt dobber nest and general dirt, grease and grime. What is the best way to clean up an alternator without damaging the internals and what unexpected things that might I encounter. I have never messed with these except for installing and removal. Budget won't allow be to buy a rebuilt on at this point. Was working when I took it off. Good alternator and would like to re use if possible.

A fairly durable unit, a good going over with compressed air should shake loose the hitchhikers, fairly simple to disassemble and clean as well, lots of info on line on the 10SI....

Like Lee said, compressed air. One the easiest ones to take apart and put together. If it wasn't for just moving and my crap stuffed into boxes, I would dig one out and take some disassembly pictures but I don't know where I put them....

Thanks, guys. Sounds easy enough. I'll tackle it tomorrow morning.

If you take it apart, remove the pulley first, and mark the case 1/2s for reassembly.

Ok. I do know the trick to loosen the pulley nut. It has an allen screw in the middle of the shaft. done that before.

I just run it off with the air gun. Also to assemble, push the brushes into the brush holder and slide a piece of wire into the small hole in the brush holder, this will keep them in place for assembly, you pull the wire out after its together.
Have fun!
