Hey guys...
Anyone ever open up a dead never to return to life car battery?
My battery endured 6+ years and is not to be resurrected. I've got a 6 volt optima now. I'm toying with the idea of cutting up my conventional dead battery and using the case to hide the optima.
Anyone ever do this? How hard is it to salvage the case for reuse?

In a word? No. Reason why? Acid.

Well perhaps you should wear a rubber suit, drain the acid ( not sure what one does with that), the empty battery case could be neutralized with soda water (I think), that's providing you are able to remove the plates without destroying the case......... Personally before turning your neighborhood into the "Love Canal" of SC, take the used up POS to the recyclers, and crack out the gopher trapping money and buy the real looking battery case for your battery!

According to this science homework site: www.coursehero.com/tutors-problems/Chemistry/8296768-G-A-car-battery-contains-10-L-of-43-M-sulfuric-acid-Using-the-valu/You'll need over 8 million TUMS tablets to neutralize the battery. Sulfuric acid is powerful stuff. Now instead of a buffer like calcium chloride, you could try to balance the strong acid out with a strong base like...sodium hydroxide = Lye = well, just use draino. Throw in a few thousand Sudafed tablets and you will really be cookin'! We're talking a SERIOUS exothermic reaction. Don't let it boil and spray up on your face elsewise you won't need a mask for Halloween anymore. After the heat goes down, you should have sodium sulfates left over. (Without adding the Sudafed. I don't make meth/ice so I don't really know how that process works.) I think the expensive retro battery covers will look more "period correct" anyway.

I had the pleasure of speaking to the real live Bo yesterday so I guess he's managed to not have peeled his face off with a battery bath just yet ...

Hey BoBo? Did your science experiment succeed?

Yup.
I originally made a wooden box out of a thin panel board; spray painted it black.
For the tar top replica, I used a piece of rubber that I had cut two holes for the battery terminals to poke through. I then cut three more smaller rectangles from my rubber sheet to fit on top, again cutting out holes for the terminals and then for the 3 caps I liberated from the old, dead battery. Painted the rubber black. In between the rectangle pieces, I filled the gaps with black caulk. I made replica lead connectors out of wood, washers and JB Weld.
Overal, it looked the part. Probably a bit better than the $125 fake box I bought for the jeep. However, I wasn't 100% sure that my rubber wouldn't melt if the battery/engine ran at temp for an extended time in SC. What I really needed was a harder rubber material...like an older vintage semi truck mud flap to do it right.
...so, in the end, I drained the old battery, used a saws all to cut the top off and then added my little knickknacks to it to make it look the vintage part. I'm still using the wooden box.
The other fun part was cutting and extending my original (CJ?) group 1 battery hold down tray to fit a group 2 battery.
No acid burns received, you tree huggers. The acid is safely stored. I'm contemplating how to salvage the remaining box to store my optima inside now.

I'm intrigued by this project but I too would like to see pictures. I know I live about 2 miles away, but I also know you pretend to not be home when I come over. Bastage!

The wretched remains of the rubber tar top on the fender. Former group two battery upper deck in the truck. It's ok...for now...while I'm conjuring up my next plan.
