After separating the transmission from the transfer case on my M38, I noticed a pocket of grease on the surface of the transfer case where it mates to the transmission. What is the purpose of this grease and what type of grease is it? Is there a grease fitting that replenishes it or should I pack it before reassembly?

Old oil and grime build up? No grease needed there.

Just accumulated in a void inside the gasket. Clean it and forget. Oilly
