I had the distinct pleasure and honor to attend the official retirement ceremony for Colonel Noel T. Nicolle, USA. Part of the ceremony was devoted to awards to be made to the Colonel. Among the various certificates and an induction into the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara, Noel was awarded the Legion of Merit for his years of dedicated , exceptionally professional service and dedication to his Country, his men and the Army. I’ve never seen so many stars and eagles in one place ever! The man in charge and officiating was none other than General Mark Milley, Chief of Staff, United States Army, who made the awards. Col Nicolle had worked for him prior to the General’s promotion to his current position. In attendance was Col Nicolle’s family, father and mother and sisters, with a nephew who holds the rank of Captain in the USAF. I wanted to talk to his father about Jeeps. 1950-53, while serving in Germany his father worked on M38s and all sizes of wheeled and tracked vehicles. What does he like best? His 1961 MG. He showed a half-dozen photos on his phone. What does he badly want to acquire? A WW2 WC Command Car. I did get one gem of information about jeeps from him. “I’ve never greased a throwout bearing. I’ve never heard of anyone doing that. As soon as it starts spinning all the grease will fly away from it.” I could see though that he was more interested in his son’s retirement ceremony. Another day, another interview perhaps. Gentlemen, ignore the fat old guy on the left. I give you Colonel Noel T. Nicolle, My friend and proud owner of an MB.

That is a fantastic report, Scout! And a great picture, too...of both gentleman. Sounded like quite the party, too. For some reason, I had it in my head that it was tonight. I pleased as punch that you were in attendance. I'm also a little bit giddy that I did just a bad enough enough job on that carb so I could be a match maker between you two. I'm not sure I have ever told Noel about this site. Maybe he will join in now that retirement begins!

Great story and you do indeed clean up nicely. You don't have me completely fooled though. My guess is if you weren't hiding your hands we'd still see a little Jeep grease under the fingernails.

Heck yeah he is hiding grease. Noel bought my old MB, so I'm sure he was out in the parking lot trying to make that beast run...for a general or two!

There was no trying about it. He did bring it as a symbolic way to depart and General Milley was razzing him about it. Unsurprisingly, it did quite well!

Whenever I get tired, and all of the time it takes to keep up with all of this that I am involved in. I am reminded of the good that does come out of all this Banter. Salute!
