Ok, here it is..... Kind of long winded, but I'm starting from the very beginning.
Let's see what the brain trust has to say.... I'm bum fuggled.
Saturday a week ago, I drove 'er to work one night, (14 miles) it was the first time she's been fired up since the trip to the woods back in Jan. A 150+ miles while pulling a small trailer loaded with my camping stuff, only issue was a flat tire. Engine ran great.
Well back to last week.... There was only a quarter tank of gas left, so I filled up on the way. Ran 45 and 50 in some places for the 7 mile run on the service road, no issues. When I left for home, the next morning, (approx 45 degrees), I noticed something was off when I could only make 35 mph up a slight hill. Before I made the top, I lost more power, it started detonating severely, back firing through the carb and the temp instantly climbed from approx 150-160 to around 200. (She never runs hot) I was beginning to think the distributor moved, pushed in the clutch, it wouldn't idle, so I let up the clutch again, the engine re-fired. I started looking for a good place to pull off and check things out. All of a sudden, she cleared up and started running good again, the temp instantly dropped back to 150/160, so I continued home. Since it was Sunday morning and no traffic I just took the blacktop home instead of the county roads. It ran good until I got to what is known locally as roller coaster hill, its really two back to back fairly steep hills. Normally,I try to be running 50 or so at the bottom so I can top the hills at at least 40. I felt the jeep start to lose power half way up the first hill, I hammered it on the downside, I was probably 55 or better at the bottom of the next, but it started the detonating/back firing/ heating up business again, I topped the second hill floor boarded, 5 mph, first gear, in the ditch so I wouldnt get a sheet metal enema from behind. It cleared up again and and drove the remaining 5 miles home without issue.
Later in the week, I did a quick check on timing, compression, found nothing that stood out except the number three plug was considerably whiter than the other normal looking three. So, I started thinking fuel delivery issue, fuel pump checked out. Carb didn't have any trash in the bowl. Fuel line connections seem tight.
Fast forward to yesterday, I drove it to work again. (Temps in the mid 70's) Didn't have any issues getting there, but I drove all secondary roads and really didn't get over 30 mph, except for the last three miles or so. This morning, (45 degrees again) I started home, same problem started at the same place. I pulled off and removed the inline fuel filter and replaced it with a piece of fuel line from the tool bag. Thinking maybe I got a trashy tank of gas at the last fill up. Started up again, drove home, it started gradually losing power at the end, but not as bad, it didn't heat up, and I was able to maintain some speed. When I pulled in the drive way, I noticed it had a single cylinder dead miss, pulled the plug wires, narrowed it down to number three. Pulled to plug, insulator was pearly white, the center electrode was melted and shorted. I did a compression test, 50 pounds of compression.
Here's the kicker, this afternoon, I drove it a couple miles to try to get a state inspection, it ran decent, but not quite right. Checked compression when I got back, number 3 back up to 100 psi, the other cylinders are running around 110 psi.
I haven't checked valve clearance yet or done a leak down test.. Hopefully later, gotta mow the weeds in the yard.
Any ideas?
