This is the flywheel from the PE-95. I popped the 97 tooth ring gear off tonight and will install a 124 tooth ring gear as part of the intended genset to red 3A motor swap. The PE-95 has no clutch so there is no wear to the flywheel. There is light rust and discoloration. Can I run it as-is or should it be "resurfaced"? I've had a flywheel resurfaced before but am not sure how critical it is or how bad one needs to get before it is required. I never resurfaced the flywheel on the gray 3A and it seems fine. [/URL]

Nothing wrong there, run it, if you can!.......... Not sure you will be able to just pop the ring gear on, may be different flywheels all to gether 3A. Being bigger in dia.

Hmmm....I thought the MB and 3A flywheels were the same. I'll find out soon enough.
Worst case I use the existing flywheel already in the 3A. Based on everything else I've seen on that 3A that flywheel will most definitely need help. I was hoping to do this motor swap in one day without the downtime of messing around resurfacing a flywheel but that might not be realistic.

Or can you switch out starters?

Or can you switch out starters? I suppose I could but it'd probably be easier to just use the right flywheel since I don't have any extra starters laying around at the moment.

If you have access to a bead blaster, I'd remove the rust on it. Rust doesn't go good with anything. Pay attention to the bolts that mount the flywheel to the crank. The two locating bigger ones. Some are tapered, some are straight shank. Does it have the timing marks on the forward side? Save the ring until you have it all scoped out. Oilly

Ahhhhh....I was thinking chucking the MB engine (with flywheel) in the CJ3 and then using the starter that was in the old generator that is a sweet workbench now. Don't pay me any attention. I usually muddle up really good Oilleaker plans!

Oilly Yup I have the tapered bolts and it does have the timing marks on the front. I have already painted them white for ease of future viewing. I do not have easy access to a bead blaster so I'll probably just steel wool it the best I can and call it good. And Moose, this is the starter it had on the genset....it won't quite fit in the 3A. It'd be pretty cool if it did though....

Hey if the engine doesn't run well, with a starter like that, who needs a engine?
