Came to the realization that I was driving with the front drive engaged. Plopped the levers to the proper position and on a bumpy road it would pop into neutral. Fixed that, fair the well, by tying the lever forward to the hole for the keyed coil. Snazzy, huh? A Guru told me my spring clips, that hold the shift levers in place, were shot. Got those, so how do I put them in? Keep in mind all of my wrenches and most of my hammers are left handed. JB

Take the pivot pin out and the levers are free to pick out....... If, you can get the pivot pin out!............ I would remove the detent springs/balls for inspection as well, that's what really holds the levers in gear. Good luck on repairs.

Adding small spacers will compress the springs more, thus add pressure on the detent balls. Tim

Those flat springs are more of a anti-rattle function than holding it in gear. The two hex caps on the side of the shift tower contain the springs and balls that go in and out of detents on the transfercase shift rails. I'm not sure you can get access to them while in the Jeep. That would be a challenge. At best you will need a mirror and a magnet tool to get at them. You may have to excavate the crud to find them. Look at a parts breakdown first. Oilly

Thanks Kids, Whole guts of my machine is an MB. Looking at an exploded view, I see what appears to be a set screw for the shift lever pin but do not see the balls and springs. Do see the spring clips, though. Not on the drawing of the 2A TC either! Can all this be done through the floor, or am I getting in over my head.

Here is a decent view showing the detent balls and springs location. These are down by the two shift rails. One on each side. See the cap held on with the cotter pin? Now look on both sides in line with that cap. There are the two hex caps described by Leaker. These hex caps retain the balls and springs. You should be able to get at both without TC removal. The passenger side will be easier. It will also help if you remove the skid plate. Also, the spring will be fairly easy to get out. To get to the ball may require a small magnet on a stick.

Thank you all. That picture cleared up a lot. I was looking too high for the ball and spring combos. I see them on my exploded drawing now. May get a chance to eyeball my own situation this week and see how hard access is going to be. Will be ordering the parts from Carl tomorrow.
One other minor question: With all the noise this machine makes, why would there be anti rattle clips on the shift levers?
That TC is nice and pretty green. Mine looks more like a black lump!

JB Every little bit helps on rattles, or as my sister old say, "Raindrops Make The Ocean"............ Tims stuff is operating room clean, trust me most of the rest of us have black lumps, LOL

Tim likes clean for sure!! That pic couldn't possibly be from Hawk's Garage. Look at that tractor tire. No way that would have been allowed through the door.

And the Garage Doors!!! Holy Toledo, you can't hear them operate. That is NO BS. The front door operates flawlessly as well. Reveal all the way around is within a 32nd of an inch the same. The Tractor is in the Garage. I wanted to sit on it when I was there, but didn't dare ask. You think Sir Hawk is fussy about his Jeeps. Don't even think of messing with the Kubota!

Contrary to the kind words posted, my garage is not clean, and my tractor will occasionally be put away muddy. HG can confirm this, as he has seen this space. On the other hand, I do try to keep the Willys Jeeps clean. I'll admit I'm kind of a freak about that.
But the real freak is Jeff...AKA Split Personality. At every FCT and BHR, upon the completion of the day's trail ride, he disappears from the group. An hour later he pulls back in to home base with a spotless Willys. He can't even go one night knowing there is mud on his Willys. And he know full well the thing is going to get dirty again the next day. Now that is a true freak!
