I was thinking about this the other day and I figured it would make an interesting thread. What tools have you accumulated specifically for your Willys? Tools above and beyond what a normal garage would have.
I have bought a Miller welder along with all the needed welding stuff. A steering wheel puller. A hub puller. I bought a big air compressor for a spray gun and pneumatic tools. Tools for rebuilding an engine like a valve spring compressor and a piston ring compressor I high quality (snap on) torque wrench. An angle grinder with lots of discs. A sandblaster for the rust and cleaning things up. A blast cabinet to clean small parts
I'm sure there is more that I have bought, but that's all I can think of now. The steering wheel puller is what got me thinking about it. Its a tool that I have used once and probably wont use it more than a few more times but it does a job that only it can do without eating up a lot of time or ruining the wheel. I got sick of looking at it and worrying about losing parts for it, so I made a box to store it in.
I am sure I there are tools I'm forgetting, and I'm sure there are tools I have yet to purchase in order to make me and my Willys happy and healthy.
So, what tools have you accumulated just for your hobby?

An excellent thread I make my living as a Mechanic so most of my tools are duel purpose but have two of most everything so I do not carry back and fourth..... Jeep stuff, a sandblasting pot, cabinet, compressor to run both...... Several welding machines, no sure if that counts as I use them for other things, lol . 20' car hauler trailer. I will add more later. Lee

All of the above - in spades - a vertical mini-mill, a dedicated tapping tool/jig, carburetor-specific tools, fuel pump-specific tools, a drag link socket, a wheel bearing nut socket, distributor wrenches, and a couple of special-purpose, home made wrenches.
Oh yeah. Dedicated brake tools too!

Captain, Sure they count. I use some of the tools I bought for my willys for other things but I bought them for the willys or with the willys in mind. Ive welded things, used the torque wrench, angle grinder, most have been used on other projects. But things like a steering wheel puller... haha, how often will that be used? My kids helped me make a wood box to store it in. As usual, the project got way out of hand and now its painted green, has hinges and 2 latches I got from ebay, and I think red letters are in its future. But one things for sure, I wont lose any of the parts. But I imagine someone in the future finding the steering wheel puller and thinking "What the hell is this thing for"
Scout, I figured you would have lots of specific tools because of the great work you do and the service you provide. It must have taken a while to find the specialized tools you use.

If you plan on keeping a Jeep running and restoring them, we all will end up with the same set. By experience, not by planning. Now, that said, The Captain is a clear winner in this event. His tool kit is almost another Jeep in the back compartment. A go to guy on the trail. So, maybe you should also start a thread on what to carry when way out in the boonies! When your Jeep is not running and you complain, he looks at you and says " I have one along".

Wow Rick, I didn't even think of 24 volt electrical tools required for the OD Mule!
Let's see...
made in USA axle hub puller made in USA 1970's tach/dwell and timing light kit crankshaft hub installer that will only fit a studebaker. made in USA mis-matched rusty thrift store and pawn shop wrenches to leave in the Jeep's toolbox.
one fuel pump restarting rock from the 2014 fall color tour.

Two years at FCT and no beak downs, the Jeep gods have shined on me and I am greatfull, that brings up another thing, for those who.continually insult the great John North Willys by mispronouncing his name may be jinxing yourselfs and end up in Jeep Hell!........ Jeep Valhala for me!

We are men, we have to like tools. haha.
I was thinking about the tools, like spindle nut wrench, that has one use and will be used a few times and sit in a box for years. A lot of you guys are constantly working on different willys, which is awesome. I am planning on getting my 2 willys on the road and I don't have plans to work on many more. But who knows what the future will bring, I have 3 kids and at least 2 of them are interested in old jeeps. If they save up and buy a jeep, I will be working on them. And the fact that I will have all the tools will make it easier to work on them.
Don't get me wrong, it's great to have the tools and know that you have it in case you need it. When I wanted to tare down my engine to bring it to the machine shop I had to borrow a valve spring compression tool from someone because I hadn't bought one yet. Now I have a valve spring compressor, piston ring expander and a piston ring compressor that will be used once and stored away and waiting for another project or a catastrophic event where they will be put into service. I have a lot of systems yet to work on, like brakes, axles, trans and transfer case and I am wondering how many tools I will have that wont be put to regular use but are important to have in order to do the job correctly.
Don't get me wrong, I am more than happy to invest in a new tool and I'm looking forward to having everything I need to rebuild my willys. Maybe having all the tools will prompt me to pick up more projects just so I can use the tools. I was just curious if you guys have thought about the same thing or if this thread had made you think about it.

Oil, I think you are right. We will all end up with the same basic of tools. It is interesting as someone gets deeper and deeper into a willys what kind of tools you start to hunt for. Gotta love ebay.

All above tools have found their way to my shop. How about an engine stand. Also...body tools. I don't have an engine crane, but I do have a Kubota tractor for this.
I've recently added..
Transmission Jack 12 Ton Press

Kubota tractor is indeed a tool. I was shocked to see how many Jeep fellows including me own one. So, A willy's person is attracted to a Kubota. Lee has begun to combine a Willys with a Kubota. Another thread idea. I'm totally for one. Very tempting. I just read that one members Kubota powered CJ2A gets 31 MPG, and has enough torque to pull a overdrive uphill. I may have to look into this. LOL, Oilly

Leaker...agreed. Seems the Kubota and Willys are brothers from another Mother. They are tough little beasts and an invaluable resource. Love my little orange monster.

I guess this post doesn't belong here since I'd never use this on a Willys. One day, I might use it on my GPW, though! And now a quiz for Oilly...what is it? (I should have bought 2- one to preserve and one to use!)
