Just curious if anyone has noticed one version being better than the other.
I think the originals had a spring pressing against a thimble like plunger. The modern manufactured have a wider spring and a massive ball bearing.
Does one style perform better or worse than the other?
I pulled the ball bearing out of my modern pump and dropped in the thimble shaped plunger yesterday. I went for a drive today. My starting up pressure was the highest I've ever seen. About 50lbs. While driving, I'd like to think I saw more positive movement on the gauge than usual, but I'm not entirely sure if that was wishful thinking or not.
Anyone have an opinion on the matter?

I do not have an opinion!, other than each type was engineered for the type of spring supplied. I know people who have shimmed the spring with washers to up the pressure. Perhaps HG can chime in on this!!!!

Personally my spring is a lot bigger and so is my big brass ball . I think the thimble headed ones are the older ones HTF would shimming the oil pump make any difference? I think you're asking the wrong guy. However I do know this the older ones take longer to prime! And the captain being 51 today I'm sure he understands this by now.
Now I got to stop at the store for some Coors and some camels so Lee go back to pullin your stump!
