Can anyone say "Greetings Fellow Flatfenders!" three times, and fast? I'm still trying.....! If you can, let me know and I'll buy you a beer (or three). The only trick is you'll have to come across to South Africa to cash in .
I'm kinda new to the CJ2A game. I had been wanting to do something like restoring an old vehicle for some time, and last year a '48 CJ2A came up and I couldn't say no! Here in South Africa it's proving to be a real challenge: Parts are scarce, importing from the USA is possible but our poor exchange rate, postage and import duties are prohibitive, and depending on the state of our dysfunctional postal system, parts can take anywhere from 1-4 months to arrive. If they do. But hey, who said it was going to be easy?!
So this forum came up a few times during my web searches for technical know-how, and I figured I should join. I'm looking forward to posting some queries, posting any answers that I can, and getting to know the Jeep Community even further. I already recognise some of the names from theCJ2Apage forum!
Cheers guys,
Mike

Welcome, Mike. I tried to say "Greetings Flatfender Fellows" and couldn't get past the first word on my first attempt. Obviously my brain is still asleep...or it's still groggy from Oilly's HBRs. (Don't ask!)
Good for you for making yourself at home in the "garage". The knowledge pool is quite deep here and everyone is quite friendly and ready to help. It sounds like your biggest hurdle will be acquiring parts.
Glad to have you around.

Welcome to the fun relaxed Jeep site. We try and help seriously, but also like to joke here. Never take a insult seriously. It's never intended to hurt/injure you. You should hand it back whenever possible, including good advice on technical problems. We do however need to know which side of the isle you hail from. Willis or Willys? Don't research this, just blurt it out. I also recognise you from the CJ2A page. It's very interesting to hear about your location and what kinds of Jeeps/parts/repair is available there. British vehicles, motorcycles, Jeeps, we all seem to like the same stuff. Any Jeep friends/clubs / runs in your area? Hop on the wagon and come along for the ride. John

Thanks guys for the welcome, it's good to be on board. Yes, I have noticed a different style on this forum - very relaxed and a lot of joking and fun. Can't wait.
John, I know you from the CJ2A forum and have always appreciated your advice there - it has helped me greatly!
Yes, parts are a problem here, but fortunately I bought a very complete and original vehicle to start with. It's mostly just the wearing parts that I am having to replace. Old original Jeeps are very rare. Back in 1948 the South African Army imported 256 militarised CJ2As, and this remains the entire stock in the country, give or take a few. They were all 1948 models, and within a few body/engine numbers of each other. Over the years many would no doubt have been lost to abuse or neglect, and many more to being cut up, cannibalised and turned into something else. I don't know how many of these original CJ2A's remain, but it can't be many. I found one, and it is in fairly good shape, and mostly original! I plan on doing a full restoration, and am almost a year into it. There are no clubs that I know of in South Africa (probably due to lack of members!), and no one near me that owns one, so my greatest knowledge resource is you gents!
Anyway, it's almost the weekend here, so you know what that means...... JEEP TIME!
Catch you all next week.
Mike

This is tooo Cool! I have my house up for sale as most of you know. I had a scheduled showing at 4:00 PM. I was loading my lab into the Chevy when a Suburban pulled up. The man driving asked me "Is this the house For Sale, can we look?" I told him it was, but I had a 4:00 showing, and that they would have to schedule or come back later. The response was that they were the 4 o'clock, and that they were early to meet the showing relator. An older Gentleman then the driver exited the vehicle with what appeared to be his Grandson, and his wife. I am assuming the driver was his Son, there was a strong family resemblance. The older Gentleman asked me "Hey There, what's that in the Garage?" I exclaimed, "That's My Grandfathers 1946 Jeep Willys (Pronounced Will-IS!) He came in and looked, Grinned ear to ear, he said, "I HAVE GOOSE BUMPS" and I will tell you they were visible. He went on to explain to me how he used to live on a farm with his father in SOUTH AFRICA, and had a Jeep for farm use there. He explained how he used to push the Jeep to the end of the driveway to meet his girl, now his WIFE for a date... He said his father in the morning would notice tire tracks, but never say a word. I explained to his wife, that his father must have liked her. she replied, "Yes Indeed he did" . Obviously a nice family. I wanted to hug them. Of course I shared my "Story" ....Naahhhhhhhh. He told his Grandson you need one of these. His wife then said you will have to leave the Jeep, and this sweet dog for me. I told her that everything I own is for sale at this point, with the exception of those two things. She smiled. I explained how I had rebuilt the whole Jeep with the exception of the carburetor . I told of my Ole Friend who does that as his speciality! . I called Scout and told him the story when I left. Point is There is a connection to these Ole Jeeps, I got to talk and LISTEN!!! I have always said, NOT THE VEHICLE BUT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THEM!! If these folks buy my house I should be most happy. If not, I made someone happy and allowed memories to be relived. They made me happy inside as well, my efforts MEAN SOMETHING! I find it most peculiar that a new member had joined from South Africa at Haines Garage just last night. I even told my wife about it, and the South Africans I met today! It is a small world. Even smaller if you are a Willys Folk. What are the chances in the time period? It is no accident...I am not ashamed, nor ever will be that GOD HAS A PLAN! There are a TON of Jeep sites out there, There is only one as personal, and where true friendship exist. I feel it is here. And its NOT ABOUT ME!! Long post I know...hope you read it and smile.

Fun story, HG. The girlfriend (now wife) is definitely a keeper if she liked going on jeep rides in the middle of the night. My wife really detests the smell left on her after sitting in my jeep. Something about the canvas mixed with the exhaust odor. However, seven years later, my jeep is still in the garage, so I guess they both have figured out how to live with the other! Lol
As for the lion...I read yesterday that he illegally shot and killed a massive bear several years ago, too. He was fined and put on probation and tried to bribe his way out of the penalties... Dirtball.

Dirtball. Dirtball yes!, and a Killer, not a hunter............ But he did pay 55K before he left home to hunt a Lion, the question is, was he miss led or did he pay to mislead ??...... A case of greed and to much money! PS

Cool story, and thanks for the memories! Yeah, I like to think that us South Africans are not bad folk if you get to know us I had the pleasure of spending 3 years in the State of Kentucky a while back - I went to College at UK in Lexington and then worked (legally!) in Louisville for a year thereafter. I made some great friends, and saw some amazing places. I'm always indebted to the American people for the opportunity given to me for those 3 years! Ya, the lion story. Well, its been on the news here too. I won't pass too harsh judgement because I don't know all the facts - but AT FACE VALUE, shooting a collared lion that has been lured out of a National Park is not quite right, is it? Anyhow, i'll update my technical post made yesterday - got some new concerns and need some more advice. Cheers Gents! Mike
