hey guys leaker you too, i got my starter and carb to do this week so hopefully i can start up my new engine this weekend in the truck, (between this and that i have 4 tests and 3 papers due but this week is the last week of class plus work this week until end of august). Anyways on top of all of this guys i have my starter and some times it engages great other times it makes a grinding noise and sounds like it missed the flywheel, i remember Leaker talking about some bearings in the nose needing some lube i have the starter standing by. All i need now are some directions thanks.

Most of the time the bendix assy doesnt need any lubrication at all. A good cleaning might help.. Does the bushing in the bell housing look to be in good shape?

Not all that familiar with trucks but you might check the bushings(s) on the end of the starter shaft or in the bell housing for wear.

Luke Skywalker: you are correct, my truck did the same thing to me. You have the foot operated pickup starter, then yes the bell shaped bendix can be a hidden secret problem. At the base of the bell part is a wide snap ring. Carefully remove the snap ring and lift off the toothed bendix cover. They get dry and stick in there. Oil it up good and if you move it up the splines too far, it pops the two spring loaded pins out of the spline tracks. Ask me how I know this. Had a heck of a time getting them back in place. Then Sir Lee tells me they re-set them selves by using the starter-----------wish I had known that. It made the same grinding, not engauging sound you have. Mine was dry in there with red rust dust. It simply didn't move up the spiral splines freely was all that was wrong. Enjoy! Oil

No, but you see the snap ring at the base of the bendix below the teeth. John

we are not referring to the base of the splines in the armature are we? i took off the casting front with the engagement method in it, i found a lot of dirt in the armature part so i am spraying it down with brake cleaner.

Not the same starter as mine. Mine has a stamped steel bell below the teeth. There should be a number in the case. Possibly look it up and see what that starter is for. Bendixs are all different, but I've had two types cause the grinding noise. One wouldn't engauge due to rust, the other has 3 rollers in a steel covered device that upon spinning would centrifugally move out and lock the unit. When they would slip, it sounded just like grinding. Your teeth look fine. My F head has the bell housing with no bushing and a bell closed nose starter. Oil

might be those rollers as this one the teeth on the starter only spin one way.
