I can't find it. What is the torque value for the front crankshaft nut?? That's because there isn't one in the manuals. It simply says tighten with key in place. Use my BS rule of thumb... I know you wrench..... Don't think Feeeeeel! I think Oilleaker said something about tight is tight... Or something like that.....

That's why I can't find it. Everyone who has tried to aggregate info on these critters has run into gaps or outright errors in the books. I'm hoping someone among our esteemed colleagues knows of such a value. It's like looking for that piece to the "1,000 Piece" puzzle that the dog ate and never told you about it.

Scout, other than the head bolts/studs, I NEVER follow the torque specs. I've ruined more things than fixed doing that. You tighten it up by feel while watching things like gaskets squishing etc. Most items simply need to draw up the part and flatten out the lock washer. Tin covers get warped if you go too tight. On the crank nut, the cork seal between the crank gear and oil slinger is more important than torqueing that nut. You omit that and you will have a leak that is a pain in the butt. So, tighten the nut until the engine begins turning over, and then a sharp blow on it with your hand. Done! I use the 3/4 inch drive socket set and wratchet doing this. Never had any problems. Getting back to the cork that comes in the kit for the shaft, I do grind it down , it's too tall or thick. O rings are too short. The key goes in the crank for the pulley after you put the slinger on, cupped side inwards. Oil

I had the machine shop build it, but they couldn't find a torque value for the crankshaft nut. They at least told me about it so I could find that no real value exists. Just about buttoned up. I'll let ya'll know how it goes later today.

Scout...
On the two that I have done, I basically did what Oilly said. On one, I put a dab of loctite, the other I didn't. Neither have had issues.

I followed the sage advice of Sir Oilleaker. Got it to 90 foot pounds. Motor started moving the jeep. I said "Good enough" SO...
I got it all back together. Grabbed a customer's carb and went through the initial start/warm-up/shut-down/head re-torque protocol outlined by the boys at Bo's. Then I took it for a drive. I followed my usual testing path and at the usual turn-around I stopped and opened the hood. Two of the studs were slightly bubbling with a little coolant. Temp was good so I proceeded to drive about 10 more miles at 45-50mph and then back to the house. Now, when I started out I was having to use some choke when I slowed or stopped. At the end of the full run, I was using no choke, it idled well and one of the studs had stopped oozing anti-freeze. The other was showing less than it had at first. The motor did get a bit warm near the end, up to about 205º indicated, but I figure my timing is either a bit too far advanced or I was running a bit on the lean side. More tweaking and testing tomorrow. Oh. Bo's gave me a one-year /12,000 mile warranty on their work and parts. The saga continues...

It just keeps getting better and better. Got three carbs tested and done today. Temp got up to about 200, but oil pressure is still a good 30 at speed. Gonna replace the horsehair (sorry Willy), replace the civilian thermostat with a NOS bellows type and get a 7 lb cap. I put on nearly 50 miles today!

Good to hear Scout! So, 100 or 200 carbs in the wings waiting?

This motor hasn't run this well in years. Oil pressure stable at 30 at idle. Temp goes up to 180º and stays within 15º on the upside. Quiet. Except for the minor clutch adjustment I need to make.
