We may have talked about this at some point. My question is this. I have a modern reproduction set of hat channels. They come with a metal sleeve that goes where the mounting holes are. Do I need to still place wood filler strips in those for support? I think someone also motioned to me at some point that you could use synthetic wood as a substitute.

I use a ferrule welded to the hat channel instead of any type of wood or composite filler to keep the hat channel from collapsing.

Personal opinion...
If you have the spacers, I would not put wood in the hat channels. Also, I would primer the insides prior to welding in position.

Ah yes. Lee is wise beyond his age. This is why young Grasshopper (me) uses a bad ass product called "Master Series Silver". You may look it up to...see for yourself...the amazing things this product is capable of. I was skeptical at first, but five years later it has proved itself worthy of any restoration where rust must not return. It seals. It fills pitted metal. It stands up to every and all chemicals. It laughs off a 10,000 hour salt spray test. It can be used as a seam sealer. It can be over-coated with any kind of paint. It is completely UV resistant... I used it inside and outside of my hat channels. I used it to seal all seams. If water does get in, (unlikely) I left the very end of the channel open so the water will drain. Go ahead. Say it. The Hawk is the Master of Master Series Silver. The stuff ain't cheap, but it is everything they claim it to be. So now, has Grasshopper become the Master? Tim
