Last Sunday Diana and I went antiquing in NW Wisconsin, a great day!. I found this field bag, I believe they were also called a Musset bag (correct me please), dated 1951, there was also a WW2 one just like it but was really beat up, and private Johnson had to write his name on it so I passed on that one. Not a bad score for $8 cash money PS

Yeah but named ones are way cool. I write my name in my underwear, does that make them more valuable?

I think that's the bottom half of the two-part M1945 pack system not widely used during WWII but issued more in the 50s with Korea. I think a lot of MV guys use them as toolbags since it has the handle on top, and it is possible to find them dated in the 40s as well. The top half looks more like a traditional pack. Somehow, and I've never had both halves together to play with, they are meant to be connected by using the canvas straps and buckles. $8 isn't bad if you have a use for it, but I'm with Zooke on this - named items are way cool to display, even more if you have a Division/Regt or other unit designation to get you spiraling down the rabbit hole searching for the guy's ASN, DOE and possibly hometown and hunt up living relatives. I've managed ONCE to do that - and though the family were content with the item being displayed in a museum, I still felt pretty proud that I'd done my part in attempting to rejoin an article to its original family. (This item was a WWI dogtag, a little easier than a canvas bag I'll admit). Not intentionally hijacking this thread, but here's another little story not about a man named Jed.
WAIT. I will start a new thread (Proof: Old dog, new trick) about the Museum since The Professor asked about it yesterday also.

I've got one of those bags, too, lee. I think it has that waterproofing interior fabric, too. I used it to store my modern tools inside while out driving my jeep. But then detard gave me a really hNdy dandy tool roll that keeps me organized. Now, I wonder what happened to my lower pack bag. Hmmmmm.....
