I have a set of Warn "LOCK-O-MATIC" hubs off a Willys Pickup. Can I install these on my M38? If so, what do I need to do? I figured there would be a ton of info online but I haven't come up with much. I'd like to know how to inspect what's here to determine what needs replacing if necessary. And if they can fit on an M38 is it as easy as just bolting them on or do I need to pay attention to any special torque/endplay/preload type requirements? Thanks in advance.

Bolt them on, my 2A has them. I would replace the O-ring on the engagement dials (I need to do this on mine), otherwise clean them up, grease and install. The wheel brg nuts are unique to the aut-locks, you will need to install them on the MC as well. Lee

Wheel bearing nut? Is that the ring in the 6 o'clock position in my pic? Wasn't sure if those were part of the hub or the truck they came off.

Yes, the ring. there will be two on each side, and two very small dowel pins that lock them together. You cannot use the standard nuts as there is not enough clearance for them. Pop a flange off the MC and try and slide the auto-lock on there, you will see what I am talking about. Lee

Two per side? I just checked the truck again and there is only one per side. There's the ring type like what is pictured and what appears to be a standard nut behind it plus a couple washers mixed in before you get to the bearing. Hmm...so will I need to find a couple more wheel bearing nuts before I can install on the M38?

I kinda think the other nut Lee is talking about looks like the one you have except it has small indents around it so you can set the lock-screw that is in the one pictured above. I think it also has a locking lip that slips into the slot on the spindle to lock the whole set-up same as the washer and nut set-up for the wheel bearings. Pleas correct me if I'm wrong Sir Lee!

On mine there are 2 rings, and what I thought was a dowel to lock them together, perhaps it is a setscrew . maybe mine are an older style, or bubba has made an appearance in Maine . I guess whatever works is fine, when the pompous ass Willis police start critiquing wheel bearing nuts , I'll get upset . Lee

There is a set screw in the ring but I'm still not sure how it works. I'll keep searching for a manual or parts diagram for these. Given the condition of the vehicle they were removed from I'm surprised they weren't shimmed with scrap wood and hose clamps.

I have a set of Warns on my extra pickup front end. After reading this, I'm leaving them right where they are. Selectro, Sears, Dualamatics, Kelly, lock outs don't need that wierd set of round lock nuts. Ick! Oil

Oil I've only ever removed one other set of hubs - "Perfect Circle" brand which IIRC were Selectro knock-offs. They pulled off in one neat assembly after removing the 6 bolts holding them on. With these Warns, I had to remove the 6 bolts plus two snap rings in order to remove the hubs in two or three different pieces. As a result, I ended up with a handful of two different sized roller bearings. What a mess in comparison to the other ones. Everything is cleaned and ready to go on the M38 if/when I get the courage to try it.

The older Jeeps had a nut on the end of the front axle which was under the small cap. Some lock out hubs have provisions for it and some don't. Bubba was famous for simply cutting the threaded end off. I ended up buying axles for my MB due to this, Oil
