I think the tonnage tag on the front of WWII Jeeps is just Plain Ole Cool. I am not however paying $40.00 for a repop. Decided to make one myself. Scrap metal from body work. $0.00 Gallon paint can bottom for circle pattern. $0.00 Trace the bottom of the can. It is close to a 7" diameter. Measure out the center of the circle , measure in 5/8 inch from the outside. Drill two 3/16 holes. Match up the back plate, center , mark with a marker and drill. I used a dolly , and Dremel tool to smooth and straighten the edges. Primed and painted with nice Yellow Tuorcy Gave me $0.00 I will let this dry a few days, while I look for the proper BRASS fasteners I need. I will make own stencil.

Hmmmmm....that yellow looks like a dead match for a NY 1946 license plate. Why don't you go ahead and make me up one for the WC? I can do the stencil if you don't want to mess with that part.
Please.....pretty please?

Moose Read back... It is the paint you donated to me with the plate. It's Perfect. Are the WC plates the same size as jeeps?

Utter bullshit! .......................Tonnage Tag , what the Hell is that! . You claim to be a purist/Mr. correct/pomp us perfect, and you cannot call it it's real name. Then to top it off, that non bridge crossing, Whop Gypsy Jew pal of yours from south of the Cooper, kisses your bottom as he wants one as well, not realizing you made yours from what you picked out of his garbage can . I am surprised Bob did not pick up on this first!. Unbelievable . Lee By the way, it's a "Bridge Plate", all the same size.

HG is right about it being a British thing back then. When the official bridge plate could not be had, it's been documented that they utilized the tops and bottoms of bean cans. Not sure if it's coffee or the other kind of bean.

Ok Limey lovers, this is "America" , even though Washington is full of dipshits , and we have our own English language, it's a damn "Bridge Plate" non the less. In Germany and Japan, they called it a bull's-eye. If your in the UK call it what they do! . To improvise construction one should use items available to a GI in a theater of war, like the top from a can of OD paint . Or a coffee can lid like the ass kisser from south of the Cooper suggested! . So did the Army have bridge plate police , that sat at bridges to see if the plate matched the rig ??. AND what was the punishment for a Bridge Plate violator ??. Where the hell is Bob when you need him, he knows this crap . Lee

I just wanted to check in here to let you know that I talked at length with Bob via PM and he gave me his explicit permission to paint the cover on my rear axle white and wire a light under the body to shine on it like the Brits did, so he could follow my "bouncing ball" if he ever got behind me in a nighttime convoy. Mind, I have to get on the road in the frickn daytime first. WAIT Do I want Bob behind me in a convoy -or anywhere ELSE- at ANY time?

Called them M.P.s. Oily...I'm not entirely up to speed on the WW2 system, but the two numbers would say what class the vehicle is in solo and then if it had a trailer attached. For the jeep, I think it could have said 2/3. However, all the pictures I've seen just have a 2 on them. I have no idea what class the WC is in. I bet Detard has the manual to research! Hey, Detard...I'm sure Bob is okay to have following your rear. However, if you breakdown, think twice about using the wrench he hands you...and keep an eye on your own tools...especially NOS ones.

I taped the plate with blue painters tape. Used stencils from the local hobby store . Cut them out with an exacto knife Sprayed the letters with black, then removed the tape. I applied three coats of clear. I attached some EDPM rubber to act both as a hold on the grill and protect the paint. I fastened with brass screws, washers and wing nuts purchased at ACE hardware. Those guys at the store get quite the laugh out of my Brass purchases . Here is Finished .

Are you going to drive this jeep and get it dirty, or put it in your living room? If the later, then you need to start looking for a driver. The fun is behind the wheel. Your detail and time spent on this is making me wonder. Oil

Your detail and time spent on this is making me wonder. Oil I used to do the same attention to detail on my vintage race bikes. Then I took them out to the race track and raced them. I figured if I crashed, I would just do them over and race it again. Once we get to Toccoa this year I lure Sir Garage through the first mud puddle I find.
